Is it possible for a book to be drenched in sarcasm and irony while also having a serious plot?

Can such a concept be enjoyable or even be taken seriously by literary critics?

Sure, have you read The Book of Disquiet?

If not, you should.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check some of these out.

I've been reading kafka but I haven't been particularly impressed by the prose or plot, maybe I'm missing something?

I like Wilde's plays, haven't given this a read yet.

John Hawkes is great for this sort of thing. Not really sarcasm so much as black humor that never feels obtrusive.

I just finished Dead Souls yesterday and this couldn't be any more accurate. Gogol is such a cheeky fuck through the whole book, I feel like he'd fit right in as a modern day /pol/ shitposter
