Based off what you've read I'd suggest the Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, and any other epics that sound interesting to you. Dostoyevsky is also good for pretty much anyone trying to get into literature. When in doubt just pick something off that chart, they're all good.

It's only a meme if you want to read fiction. If you want to read philosophy, it definitely isn't just a meme.

i've read 51 of those books. i suggest reading synopses, buy or download or check out at your library the ones that interest you, and continue from there. maybe read a fewer of the shorter ones first and then tackle the meatier ones by Joyce, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, or Gaddis.

btw, why isn't Manhattan Transfer on this list (or did i miss it)? damn fine novel.

Even in terms of fiction it's still important, especially Homer. Sophocles, Hesiod and Theognis are pretty important too. Also, you should have a grounding in Greek history and philosophy to read serious lit.

that's a good a place to start as any, i guess. i'd also suggest obtaining Harold Bloom's The Western Cannon or Genius books. both can guide you to great literature and Bloom provides explanations as to why he considers the works he cites exemplary.
