It's a very interesting book written about a boring man. I highly recommend it actually.
I don't know about over or underrated but I sure enjoyed it and would recommend it.
the prose isn't anything special but it has a very nice atmosphere, prepare for FEELS.

wtf i hate stoner now
>>8382136butcher's crossing and augustusare better
What do you mean, mixed reviews? Do you mean like goodreads or something? And if so, why are you taking them seriously at all?

augustus is interesting until the second half. Butcher's Crossing is interesting all the way through. Both are not as good as Stoner.
A fantastically written book about a completely caricatured and unrealistic man. Manipulative as hell.

It's manipulative in that it hides the complexities and struggles of the other characters. The book is an exercise in empathy. There is the obvious empathy for Stoner but just as important (and I would argue more) is the empathy that is meant to be shared for characters like his wife.
