Do you think book readers are smarter than other hobbyists on average because they read books or do they read books because they're smart?

I don't think you'd become more intelligent in the literal sense. It makes you use reason instead.
reading a lot during childhood increases your cognitve abilities.
My vocabulary was a lot bigger than that of other kids when i got into highschool, and i never had any problems in language classes. I stopped doing homework for english and german (motherlanguage) because reading german and english books all the time enabled me to ace all tests.
But please note that smart is not equal to intelligence.
So, i had a very good vocabulary and always got good grades on tests (smart) but I didnt do any homework, slept in classes, played games all day and always got horrible grades as my final grades (not very intelligent)

Depends on what they read, how and for how long. Somebody who only reads books and doesn't do anything else, is as retarded as somebody who plays vidya all day long but I take that the average reader is smarter than the average gaymer.
Probably faster than the average athlete too, although right nutrition and exercise routine isn't as obvious as one thinks. Hard to compare with guys who solve mathematical problems or do music.

>not very intelligent
You were just a lazy fucker.
science fiction is a hobby
literature takes work, if you're doing it right.

If they read airport novels, they're just as dumb as the general populace. Also invisible style stunts reading comprehension.
