this is right, I remember some polish jazz artists playing on the street because they didn't have money to buy food. And they were really good, just a bit unknown and maybe too avant-garde for most people to buy.

The best option may be a job that isn't that tiring and taking a lot of time, so that you could still pursue your interest in your free time, but I guess that it isn't easy to get such job, and earn enough money.

Forgot this in my reply, I say solid career incase you don't think you would make it. If you still want to go for it more aggressively, get a job that pays good, but also gives you a little time. Get a trade like mechanic, carpenter, welder, or something like that. Not too long to get up in those fields, and you still got time to focus on other stuff.
