That's a terrible and factually wrong assessment of Lovecraft, I don't know what Becq was thinking.
Not to say that the guy had a naive love of life (he naturally arrived at the conclusion that not existing is better than existing), but his xenophobia had nothing to do with WOW THESE PEOPLE ARE DANCING AHHH HOW CAN THEY POSSIBLY DO THIS. Also all of his friends were "amused by life", but it curiously didn't make him hate them, and on at least one occasion he helped a person who was either depressed or falling into depression ("cheer up!" is the literal expression he used in one of the letters).

Doesn't Houellebecq also mention that in the book? Also, depression is very commonly accompanied by a greater sympathy towards others.
