So its shit
It's the best of it's kind. Fun fact, it's been published in China since the 1980's, and it's actually extraordinarily well received there from what I heard.
>Japanese light novels
fucking weeb tier shit

Yes, I'm aware. But I'm one of those types who can read much faster than the typical run time of an anime episode or movie. Kind of prefer it that way actually
I don't know if i can be bothered to check them out. I like the anime, but is the book written well enough to justify reading them?
I read part of a fan translation years ago and it was horrible.
I've read the first two novels (can't be bothered to watch the gazillion episodes), and they're nice stuff you can read in a day each. Some obvious influences from ancient Asian warfare and a lot from European history, sometimes very awkward formulations, often the 'opponents' of the two main characters make it way too easy.
You won't become a genius by reading these books but they won't dumb you down either.

It is one of the best-selling book series of all time (according to wikipedia)
Surprised we didn't get a translation sooner desu, but then again, there really isn't much of a market for Japanese light novels in the west.
