Fan novelization?
I'm not gong to read a fucking script cause the author was too lazy to write an actual book.

Seems a bit weird to read the script since it's highly unlikely that a film won't be made, or at the very least a filmed performance of the play. But then, I find reading plays a bit weird even when it's Shakespeare.

So don't bother with it. I liked the old series, but I don't give a shit about middle-aged-over-worked Harry and suddenly-black-Hermione. Skip it. If they make it into a film with Emma Watson back as Hermione showing at least partial nudity, I'll consider it.

I'd watch it. The problem in the story was the dialogue more than anything, for me at least. The entire story of Harry Potter as "The Boy Who Lived" simply by being protected by his mothers love is already goofy as shit so I don't understand why anyone is taking this so radically.
>>
>>8345789
Because the fans are starved for more stories that could flesh out this universe of illogical bullshit J.K Rowling made and all we get is some shitty fanfiction that looks like it was stolen from wattpad.

>>

the books are goofy and dumb yes, but at least the ones prior to this followed the rules of their own universe. not being able to create alternate timelines is RULE NUMBER ONE of time travel in the HP universe, and going against that makes the entire final act of the third book impossible
>>
>>8345968
Don't forget that all the girls at the edgy grimdark alternate Hogwarts want to take him to the "Blood Ball".

They did, just subtly.

There's a reason everything knows she's white.

>>
>>8345702
But they specified Dean Thomas, Angelina Johnson, Lee Jordan, Kingsley Shacklebolt and Blair Zebini's skin colours, along with the Patel twins.
I think it's safe to say she was intended to be white.
A black woman playing a white girl/woman is no big deal.
The only issue in my opinion is that Rowling is playing it off as if she always intended Hermione to be black, which is obviously a retcon to gain brownie points with her huge tumblr fan base.
>>
>>8347579
>subtly
>Describes her as pale

She also can't be black because it would make make Draco's comments on her being a mudblood go from being about blood purity bullshit to generic racism.

Scorpius was adorable and the best part of the book for the first act and then Thorne of course went overboard into quipmeister quirkatron territory. The rest of the book was even worse, though, so Scorpius remains the best part.

I would read an actual novel of this, just because it's a continuation of something I was really into as a kid. But, I'm really fucking legitimately autistic and I find there isn't enough context in screenplays to give what I'm reading any meaning, emotion, or logic.

I'm not wasting my money on that.

Play will never come to my country. So I'm skipping this one entirely.
>>
>>8350300
Man, I know what you mean about the autism. I had a hell of a time attempting not to read it like some kind of bad rapid-fire slam poetry. All the emotion fell flat and I have to say that with the dialogue in some of the scenes, a novelization wouldn't even improve things much.

Logic is absent entirely.
>>
>>8350300
>just because it's a continuation of something I was really into as a kid.

Then pray it never gets a novel form release. If you have any sentimental attachment to the previous books, stories, world or characters it will trigger you hard. It shits on literally every aspect.

i literally kek'd when albus was kissing hermione multiple times

>let's have another kid

i rate it 6/10 as a huge hp fan, enjoyable read but the time traveling stuff was just... convenient

how the fuck voldemort and bellatrix had a kid, he probably doesn't even wanted to ever have sex with anyone

i liked the evil hogwarts idea and it should've been the central point of this story

i just have trouble believing that snape, ron and hermione trusted scorpius almost instantly with their lives and they were just killed because a kid said something about them he couldn't possibly know

what else... harry seriously isn't himself, dumbledore and ginny are no-characters basically, ron was ron and i liked draco's evolution as a character. that's it, really

It's like you don't view scripts as a form of writing, OP. I know it's fucking Harry Potter, but how dense can you be?
>>
It's shit but then again so is everything else HP, if you read them today and without the nostalgia goggles you would realize this.
>>
Its not that bad, the idea of Ron and Hermione geting together only once was nice. :P But, ok, you modyfie few parts, add 2-3 dialogs and you get typicall, even yaoi, fanfiction. I mean, come one! Voldemorts douther? Really? My first reaction after reading thos was 'Jezz, thats chep'. I was really thinking, how was that even possible? I mean, i just cant imagine Voldemort having sex with someone. The only idea i had was that he jerk himsef off, came into a glass ore something like that ang gave it to Bellatrix with 'Don;t dissapointe me, if you do, you will die".
But becouse nostalgia is verry powerfull kind of magic, i love it anyway :) And even thou Rowling clame, that its finale, i dont belive her becouse she said that after part 7, and ofcourse i will read anything she will gave us.

Some of the more hated parts of the book I actually like. The trolley lady was cool. A trope of the series/universe is a seemingly innocuous thing that can harm you. Howler, boggart, diary, blood quill, etc. It isn't even the first time in the series that a sweet, innocent-looking old lady was revealed to be something else. Trolley lady's name drops were nothing but fan service though.

I also liked Cedric becoming a Death Eater. It demonstrated the corruptibility of strong people and how if Cedric can "go bad", we're one or two calamities away from a similar fate ourselves.

I didn't like the plot or any of the new characterization. I'm still greatly looking forward to Beasts.

> her attempts to write outside the series flopped

The fuck? In its first three weeks of release, The Casual Vacancy sold over 1 million copies worldwide.
The Cuckoo's Calling started by selling reasonably for a debit crime novel, and received acclaim from other crime writers and critics—a Publishers Weekly review called the book a "stellar debut",while the Library Journal's mystery section pronounced the novel "the debut of the month". Once Rowling was discovered to be the author, of course, sales rose to #1, and it sold over a million copies in the UK alone. The sequels have all done very well, and everything she has ever written that isn't already a movie is being made into TV miniseries. There is no reasonable measure by which you could claim that Rowling's non-Potter publications have "flopped." She's still a best-selling author, and few people who made their fame writing for children or YA have managed to jump genres and target audiences so successfully. Rowling does not need money, and never will again.

>Once Rowling was discovered to be the author, of course, sales rose to #1, and it sold over a million copies in the UK alone.
By the time she'd written the 3rd book sales across all formats for the first 2 were 1.5M copies. Actual book sales were under 400k for the first one over two years. This is with a highly sophisticated marketing strategy and high value brand name too.

The OP on the other hand sold 2M in 2 days. Nobody gives a shit about Rowling (who seems to be distancing herself somewhat as the fan reactions trickle in), just about their next canonical HP fix, it could be written by Jack Thorne for all anyone cares.

And the reviews for the cuckoo one were mostly middling. There were some outright negative ones before and after the big reveal too.

>Should've kept it all at the school the non-school bits were the worst of 7 and what happened there sounded more interesting than what Potter was up to
This is the problem when they all grow up tho. The entire magical universe seems to be centred around a boarding school, and nothing any of the original cast does now they aren't students is going to mean anything. You can't write "wouldn't it be cool if you were chosen for a magical but also posh school" over and over either.

Do you think Rowling's one of those people that had no life outside of school and forever tries to relive what she thinks of as her "glory days"? And that's why there exists almost nothing outside that bloody school?
>>
>>8357752
>And that's why there exists almost nothing outside that bloody school?
I think it's more she used to read a lot of classic British kids literature growing up, and a boarding school is a feature in almost all of them, every kid of her era probably read Enid Blyton so she would at least be familiar with books like Malory Towers, Famous Five etc, Harry Potter is pretty much an update of that kind of fiction.

This. Boarding schools are a major trope of British kids fiction, especially group detective novels. And the HP books have always group detective novels at heart, especially early on.

I don't get how Voldy was even fertile after being resurrected as a half snake monstrosity with several portions of his mortal soul divided from his body. Voldemort had to poop you guys.

No, you have to think like a true writer. Obviously Voldemort and Bellatrix used a time turner to go back to when he was still Tom Riddle and then Bellatrix boned him. And then time stops. And then it turns over, thinks a bit, and begins spooling backwards, slow at first...

She was living on welfare when she wrote HP. She has cashed in on the series to an extent that is incredible.
Games, Toys, Books, Candy, anything you could name HP was on.
She jewed out her franchise and stumbled into what I call the Pet Rock effect (I'm sure there is a more official and proper name). Essentially it is a product that gathers a following so large that it will not and can not ever fail, regardless of the quality of the product. Harry Potter isn't a literary masterpiece. It's a mediocre to decent written book series that has been overrated to absurd points. Same as Twilight, except Twilight is marketed specifically to teenage girls.
That demographic (10-18) has been historically incredibly hard to crack, but when you can manage to crack it, you will stumble into obscene amounts of money.
Also, JK Rowling has abused the copyright system to her own advantage.
To normies it seems "edgy" but it's all absolutely true.
I have done my research on this topic.

>>8357405
Yet again, the reveal of Rowling as author was deliberate. The name alone will top any chart.
Mystery books are crap anyway.
Any old hack can write one.
>>
>>8358619

When I was a kid and I saw something with "Star Wars" on it, I would clamor for my parents to buy it, no matter what it was. My parents usually told me "No," but I guess a lot of families have enough disposable income that it's worth saving the tantrum to just buy off the little shits. Also I knew that if I really pushed my luck I was in for a clobbering, which isn't something white kids usually have to deal with anymore.

What is odd is how loyal adults are to entertainment franchises. The idea of a Harry Potter sequel movie script co-written by another author seems like the lamest thing imaginable to me, even if I liked Harry Potter I wouldn't pay a dollar for this at the thrift store or remainder pile (where millions of copies will inevitably end up).

They're both trash. There's other book series written for children that aren't shit.

I worked in a bookshop in a relatively small town and we still had people lined up for two hours picking up midnight pre-orders when the sixth book came out. And the checkout process was pretty much "hand us your vouchers, we'll hand you your books, next please."

This book's been getting advertised like crazy so I think people really expected the fans to turn up in droves again.
>>
>>8345686
She auditioned best, probably. Also possible somebody wanted some extra publicity, but that hardly seems necessary given that it's Harry Potter. Is it a big deal for you?

I think you're on the money with Mallory Towers, another one is Tom Brown's School Days (that seems to be very heavily borrowed from), but Famous Five had boarding school as more of a footnote and is pretty much what the kids did on their summer hols. And as said earlier in the convo that part of Harry Potter was shit.

I think partly she herself has a massive hard on for the boarding school fantasy (no doubt that's the major nerve touched with most people), but she also shot herself in the foot with making Harry's muggle family so irredeemable and/or not allowing the focus to move away from them much when in the non - magical real world. She'd have opened up a whole new dimension if Harry had spent some time with Hermione's parents even.

Since she very overtly has desires and delusions of writing like Dickens, if I were in her shoes the obvious direction would be writing a bildungsroman about Harry's son. And a very simple story to fit in with above would be a reversal of the original, he grew up in the magical world and goes off to find out about our world. It'd also hit a slightly higher reading age than the first lot. But 2bh I don't think she has the skill to do this, and I doubt very much she'd want a journey that she squeezed 7 books out of condensed into only one or two.

JK Rowling is a fucking hack and she probably only wrote a new Harry Potter book because there was a new Star Wars coming out and she wanted to join in on that nostalgia cashwagon
>>
Has there ever been a case like this of an author allowing fanfiction to take equal precedence with, and even supercede, their own work? Normally the author has to die before the awful hack sequels get written.

Why has Rowling sanctioned this? It just leaves such a bad taste in my mouth the way the Harry Potter series has been handled since it finished. She doesn't need the money. If she so desperately wanted Harry Potter to be a West End stage play, she could write it herself! Why's she letting some random fanfic autist do it?

Fuck this play and fuck the new upcoming films.

>>
>>8365977
>Why has Rowling sanctioned this?
From what I could work out, she wrote something like a first draft, then instead of releasing another novel got others in to turn it into a screenplay/stageplay. So I'm guessing a mix of testing the waters and a cash grab.

Now it's had some negative feedback she's washing her hands of it. I expect there's going to be a Cursed Child 2.0 that'll be heavily revised.
>>
>>8365966
>she probably only wrote a new Harry Potter book

This didn't happen though.
>>
>>8366125
So it's pure cash in according to you?
>>
>>8366142

Well it is, but I was more implying that its not a book nor did she write it.
>>
>>8366068
Has it had negative feedback? I've no idea what the fanbase's reaction has been to it, but the couple of critics' reviews I've seen were quite positive. Maybe it plays better on the stage - taken less seriously and more of a 'this is a made-up hypothetical what-if story in the Harry Potter world' feeling rather than set-in-stone canon.
>>
>>8366148
Check social media rather than print media. All the print media reviews bar one or two seem to be gushy vague tripe about how they believe in magic yet again with this play, or some equally tired trope. Social media however is full of terminator trolley, time travelling plot holes, Voldemort day and other shit and has been since the play came out p much.

And on the stage in general, you're being a little bit insulting there bruv. A good play/performance feels substantial.
>>
>>8366146
If she didn't write it though she's slapped her name on it, that's my point. If you're going to go with "she didn't write it at all" don't shy away from the implications.
