was dfw generally correct in his prediction abt the emergence of the next cultural movement being a fracturing of the over-produced entertainment industry that feasted on irony and satire?

it seems like the trump phenomena owes a debt to a media-world devoid of unacceptable but frank messaging.

was dfw also prophetic when he mentioned that some of the most clever ppl he knew in school went into marketing departments, and by that I mean, is there a person, or persons, behind the trump campaign that recognized this culture shift towards 'sensationalist irony-drenched PC satire' culture, and subsequently "krav-maga'd" the PC machine for viewers and rating, i.e., a car crash that the cameras cannot turn away from? who are other artists/writers in this vein?

>dude, Trump is entertaining!
killer insight, bro.
that was just my jaded and condescending 4chan persona. actually i think Trump is chillingly similar to Johnny Gentle and a Trump presidency would probably be similar to his
>>
shitlibs are so desperate to justify their faith in their failing credos that they'll come up with dozens of explanations for Trump's success while ignoring the obvious answer that his proposed policies resonate with Americans

people curiously don't want mass immigration to change the demographic composition of their country, their jobs to continue bleeding into China, or neocon interventionism in the Middle East and purposeless saber-rattling towards Russia as well as wars that are costly both financially and in human lives

his bombastic personality helps deliver a message that was always going to be popular

/lit/'s supposed queen Laurie Penny wrote something interesting featuring these people:

I'd buy this argument if the majority of Trump supporters weren't white middle class voters living in white middle class suburbs that, if anything, benefit every day from the cheap labor low skilled immigration and outsourcing provides. Or, if the same Trumpites that say their tired of "neocon interventionism" would readily agree to carpetbombing every country east of Israel. Or if these people even understood enough about post Cold War Russia to comment on our affairs with them.

Every Trump supporter I know doesn't think about any of this critically. They just happen to be insular and dumb.

>I'd buy this argument if I didn't have all this anecdotal evidence and these personal insults
Shocking and extremely alarming truth incoming, you're going to want to brace yourself because it's going to deeply upset you: there exist Trump supporters who are smarter than you. They have higher IQs than you. They acquire, retain, and express knowledge in more efficient and creative ways than you. They are, for all intents and purposes, your intellectual superiors. Don't reply to me, don't try to prove to yourself or me that you're smarter than these hypothetical genius Trump supporters, don't try to demonstrate your serenity in the face of this objective fact. Just let it ferment. Really ponder on it for a while. Consider. Reflect.

Jesus fucking Christ dude, do you honestly think they meant "I am more educated and intelligent than 100% of Donald Trump supporters"? I don't even care about their original point, but your argument is fucking stupid, and displays a level of reading comprehension I'd expect on fucking /v/, not /lit/.

Interesting, however I think there may still be demographic issues.

It is certain that middle aged, married tradesmen - what you would generally consider working class - will have a higher home income than, say, single college students doing part time work - who are more likely to vote Democrat.

It is not just income that defines your position in society. Someone with a low income, but with a college education, more assets and from a rich family, has a better projectory and safety net than a technical worker with a higher yearly income.

lol, of course Trump supporters are "insular and dumb", everyone who doesn't agree with my opinion is

I particularly like how butthurt the lefties get at the working class they supposedly represent whenever they don't kowtow to the enlightened intelligentsia. the modern left is upper-class kids drinking starbucks lattes and sneering at those dumb, racist proles working menial jobs

I don't really agree with this guy, but you could say that about any group of people and be correct. This whole post comes off as you wanting to feel above someone because you recognize something that's a pretty generally accepted fact about reality. Overall calm down and stop trying to give people life advice on an anonymous anime imageboard lmao

why are autists so obsessed with sentences? Are phrases not good enough? What sort of feeble mind freaks out over lack of periods and punctuated letters at the beginning of a phrase? A post on the internet is often a series of phrases connected through proper punctuation, but that doesn't mean the entire collective of it must be treated as a paragraph or series of sentences

Well, I for one like how the left has made villains out of everyone without a college degree, who hasn't read all of the canonical books and publications and who isn't versed in the officially sanctioned corpus of buzzwords.

Whatever happened to "the emancipation of the working classes must be conquered by the working classes themselves?"
>>
>>8341103
I always felt that DFW predicted a world of two types of happiness seekers: one of hard workers that grind themselves to the bones, and the hedonistics that seek happiness in pure pleasure. I think there is even an idea that the hard working merely desire an escape from it into pleasure. Though the book is called Infinite Jest I really do think his predictions are media were relatively banal and if anything, unoriginal. He made stronger more cohesive points -albeit via bombastic cynicism- about how we seek happiness.

Kys my man
>>
>>8342968
He never implied that you strawmanning idiot. The implication of a lack of education, however, insinuates whichever unaffected demographical group lacks in critical thinking, a coherent understanding of current events, and an inability for persistence. You're corroborating his (statistically substantiated) claims by playing the 'victim card' so hastily.

All of this is ignoring the fact that Trump is literally too muppet-esque to give off creeping Fascist demagogue vibes.

>>8342884
>if these people are just privileged trust fund babies

They're not so there's no point in considering your question
