Why has this novel's reputation lasted so long? Niven is good, but this was a horribly bad read.

Niven clearly got stuck in worldbuilding and came up with a bunch of interesting locations, the plot progresses only so that Niven can describe those locations, and then it ends.

and he didn't even expand that well on it in the sequels. science fiction was naive in those days. somehow ringpulp won both the Hugo and the Nebula.
It was the idea of a ringworld not the novel itself that was praise worthy.
