why do so many works of western young adult literature portray the MC's high school years as the worst time in their life, there isn't anything inherently bad about them. if anything they are the best years of your life when you could probably have the most fun with the least consequences.

because most writers are autistic turbo nerds
They're only "the most fun years" to people with absolutely shitty and stagnant adult lives.
Personally, I had some fun in highschool, but I'm glad I dropped out midway. I gained more in those two years than I ever would have had I stayed.
teenagers are winy brats who want their victim complexes validated. Even if your teenage years are bad, they will eventually end and you'll move on with your life. Adult life doesn't end until you die.

Pretty much everything you can "do" in HS is the standard order in college. Get with the program.

I always had the opposite impression. Seems like most writers portray high school as a nearly magical period of self discovery, where they get into quirky, memorable experiences. Such as drama unfolding at parties, or making out with girls during a camping trip, or whatever. To me high school was mostly a bore.
I don't get it either, I was kinda a loser in high school but I honestly didn't hate it
That didn't start till college
I have a great aversion to rigmarole and the presence of humans so high school was the equivalent to the ninth circle of Hell. Never had friends in my life, though, I had a neglectful family as well which balanced things out. Being alone makes me fond of living.

fair enough

because of the difference in how adulthood is viewed in both cultures.
