Part 3 of the "Ring of Light" quintet. I'll continue to post a part per thread until the story is over. 2 more parts left.
This part is my personal favourite because not only it has the best prose I've written, it also has the toughest piece of dialogue I've ever written, and I'm extremely fond of the philosophy and revelations in this chapter.
Enjoy.

I want to try adderal so I can finally try and sit down and work on something. My problem is jumping between too many projects and ideas that seem genuinely solid.

I keep telling myself the scope of some of the stories is too much for a first-timer, or that the idea isn't good enough to be my "debut" piece, or I just look at other works and feel as if there isn't enough soul put into my own piece compared to those that have come before.

I doubt I'll ever be good enough.

This. There are plenty of tropes to be found in WoT, but there are also some of the greatest moments in all of fantasy throughout the series. It's also extremely comfy because you get to know all of the characters so well (even the shitty ones). Even when the plot drags, Jordan still focuses primarily on the main characters, which is more than the fat sellout GRRM can say. All in all, it's like pic related of the fantasy genre if you're willing to stick with it. Not a lot of inherent value necessarily, but shamelessly satisfying none the less.

Anyone notice Sanderson is the new Tolkien? People are copying him like they used to lord of the rings. Powder mage, now Anthony Ryan's new book about dragon blood is a rip off of Sanderson's structured magic system. Anyways hope we get more brethren in our ranks. Welcome brother >>8318106

I have this strange notion that the true Tolkenian writers aren't those that shamelessly ape him, but people like Swanwick that create a whole new world of their own from the ground up.

She "thinks" she is witty. It's like those sheltered autistic fucks that used to bust unfunny jokes in school and think they were hot shit, no one usually laughed though.

Same shit, shallan is living an inside world, anything looks like it's gonna change that she does a full retreat. Her "wit" is just a self-defense to deal with the trauma of her past.

I wonder if her spren is gonna leave her when she has no more lies (truth) to feed it?

It's not completely written and edited and it's far more interesting for the few interested to read it in an episodic manner I think.
It keeps the mystery and feeling of wonder fresh instead of posting it all, read it in a sitting and go "OK, that was neat I guess."
>>
>>8319004
Yeah he's right, but lol, I think you're forgetting the fact that would really complete your argument - that author was literally one of Brandon Sanderson's writing class students.
>>
>>8319017
>I wonder if her spren is gonna leave her when she has no more lies (truth) to feed it?

Yes, Kal and Syl show the spren won't stick around to be your friend, it needs to connect to the spren's purpose. That said, I think Shallan will have plenty of lies for a very long time, just due to her nature.
>>
>>8319001

Only people that still say all fantasy is Tolkien knockoffs, are the ones that don't read anything new. They claim that x is an elf, y is an orc, and z is a midget.. i mean dwarf. They behave like Tolkien was the first to tell a fantastical story

>>
>>8319035

Still, ever since the 50s if you write fantasy you have to face Tolkien, whether to follow or to go against him but you can't just ignore him.

>>
>>8319017
That's an attractive reading but I'm not sure the text supports it. It seems like people around Shallan are shown as thinking she's witty to an extent that can't just be explained by their humoring her. A character can only be as witty as the author unfortunately.
>>
>>8319056
I don't know, book 2 pretty much makes it explicit that her "wit" is a coping method and not a legitimate great comic mind. This is Sanderson; he flat-out has her think and realise this.
>>
>>8319026
Lying conniving bitch. I hope Kaladin fucks her bright eye cooch with his dark eye rod.

Sanderson a cunt I always thought her secret was that her father diddled her when she was young and she couldn't take the dick anymore and ran. But now that I know Sanderson, I know he will never write that.

I enjoy Sanderson, but he is too kiddie friendly, need some gri to liven things up, maybe some cucking. Bright eye women taking bridge slaves to their bed ala the Spartacus route, would love to see milf bright eyes getting deep dicked by those strong bridge slaves.

That's the average you shitstain. If 10 people live to 100 and 10 people live to 1 year old, the average is some 50 years old. Doesn't mean everyone lived to their 50s and then died.
In the middle ages if you could survive your childhood and teen yearsbyou would reach an old age almost surely, hence the average being so low. Many died as children but those who didn't lived to get old.

I haven't read WoR, so that might set me straight. But when she was introduced, I figured the Thaylen captain was just humoring her, but then Jasnah, who is canonically supposed to be intelligent and no-nonsense, started complimenting her wit, I got a sinking feeling like, 'oh, she's actually supposed to be witty, and the author can't convey that.' Thats compatible with her using her 'wit' as a defense mechanism. My point is just that if she's actually supposed to be witty, defense mechanism or not, that's not conveyed well.

I agree that Sanderson isn't much of a witty writer himself and that this bleeds into his protags often, but I absolutely disagree Shallan is meant to be taken as a straightforwardely witty person. Her flashbacks POVs and self-actualisations in her character arc in book 2 literally explicitly show why she reverts to shitty humour as a coping mechanism.

What makes prose bad?
>>
>>8320541
>I never said it was a consistent trait among his male leads and I don't even think it is.

My point was that it's bizarre to single out his female leads for being "witty" when his male leads are just as much. Lightsong's chapters were literally 100% unadulterated Sanderson "wit" between him and Blushweaver. Wayne is the exact same sort of lolsorandum wit. Alcatraz is also this. Kelsier was as well, regardless of what else you think of him. And Raoden laid the wit on thick too.

My point is just that it's a habit of Sanderson's and doesn't have anything to do with the gender of the character. Vin wasn't "witty". Shallan and Siri are. Lightsong and Raoden are. It's just a habit of his.

>>8320541
>You're welcome to harbor your own beliefs about why she has that trait but in all honesty, you are reading far too much into it.

It isn't objectively bad, but it obfuscates intent and action, turning a story into a painting of letters. Cleverly done, it can bind symbolism to the surface, clarifying themes while subduing literal meaning. Done poorly, it becomes a doorstopper full of childhood scribbles. Joyce is the worst offender, to the extent that reading his work is like coding in brainfuck. You don't do it because you like it, or because it's good, but because even getting a suggestion of what's going on is a sign of skill

Doing a re-read of Wheel of Time and enjoying it plenty. I'm about 1/3 of the way through Lord of Chaos and it's still one of my favourite books in the whole series.

It'll be interesting to see how far I get this time. I have read the whole series cover-to-cover twice, and have tried numerous other times, making it part way through to varying degrees. Book 6 is usually about the point where I get distracted by something else and forget to go back to the books for too long. I really would like to finish another complete read through because I honestly enjoy some of the Sanderson volumes and I still love the way things come to together increasingly toward the end.

I'll be interested to see what progress they make on the TV show that Harriet announced a month or so back. I know they've been talking about it forever but the press release seemed like it was definitely going ahead this time. Makes me a little bit worried. I know you could savagely cut the shit out of these books and still maintain the important core elements while making it into something concise enough to film, but all the little bits of flavour and tertiary plot lines that will get cut are what make the rest of the story so good.

>See a bunch of my favorites that aren't the more well known or pulp popular fantasy novels

Gemmel a great (if a little predictable with similar protagonist each time)
Lion of Al-Rassan a GREATE
Jackal of Nar a GRATE
Briar Knight a GRATE. Also weirdly based off the idea of the Roanoke colony being taken away to another universe, albeit with no actual influence beyond that as a brief seedling of the backstory.

Briar Knight series has one of the protagonists being a white knight whose angst is about being more white knight. But the older ranger slightly misanthropic dude, the scholar-nerd, the tomgirl princess and later the charming spaniard guy make it an ensemble cast.

He continues being old, bitter, and jaded, if that's your thing.

Not bad for YA

Night Angel is super edgy
Lightbringer is much better

I'm 26.... also I hate people, would nuke the world if I could. Think about an heroing all the time.

I honestly think he's shit, but I've only ever picked up one of his novels (pretty sure it was called "The Black Prism").
Like the other anon said, it's okay for YA, I guess. Just didn't quite do it for me, tbqh.

He's ok, but he's a total edgelord and almost more anime than Sanderson.
The Lightbringer series is basically ATLA with more rape.

I dropped Night Angel after the weird rape/feminization thing that happened on the first page, but Lightbringer is still edgy as fuck.
The whole thing with that girl and the olive oil was just unnecessary.

I tried with this book and couldn't find shit. Help me, senpai.

Finished Mistborn yesterday.
Any more coming of age stories with a little girl as protagonist?
>>
>>8326037
Nah it was way over the top. I'm not objecting to the threat of rape necessarily, but the way it was presented was so cartoonishly evil that it killed the drama of the situation.

>Fantasy recommendations

I am human garbage on an Urban Fantasy binge

I just binged the Dresden Files audiobooks all voiced by James Marsters aka Spike from Buffy.
I need audiobooks to listen to at work. NEED. Work and longass public transit.
I really want something akin to the Dark Noir Urban Fantasy shtick.

Goodreads a shit, next top pick for similar to Dresden Files was Mercy Thompson which was bland AND boring as shit despite exponentially more reviews than anything else.

How the fuck to I get James Marsters out of my head. He's replaced my internal monologue voice and I can't get it to stop.

Recommendations in OP look interesting, but I burned through roughly one audiobook per day so I'm going to need more than the four in the one OP image.

I don't know how GRI Night Angel is because I didn't read past the first chapter, but Lightbringer is pretty heavy on the GRI at times.

Maybe try the Sandman Slim series? Seems like it would be up your alley.

Lightbringer series is good, but you're better off just reading Sanderson rather than a Sanderson junior like him.
>>

Tried reading but it just seems so... non-hard. Too many muh strong females, and the plot device with the moon just doesn't seem plausible at all. Everything should be red hot and molten from the kinetic energy.
Also, that Neil DeGrasse Tyson analog annoys me too.

Wouldn't Khellus be the cuck in that relationship?
He did raise another man's child.
