Alright /lit/, I need a little bit of your help.

I'm writing a short story about a German citizen set right after WW1.

How can I get a plot twist working so that the reader doesn't know the protagonist is actually Adolf Hitler until the very last sentence? Would the story end right as the NSDAP is formed for the very first time (1923)?
>>
Names would be important for one. And seeing that it's a post-modern WWI novel you're working on and not one during the war, that would actually be a bit more difficult, as you can't usually have the protagonist being called "soldier" this and "soldier" that.

Just throw clarity and honesty out the window.

Yeah, true. I was thinking of making it just in first-person, and the whole thing is sort of just Adolf stating his thoughts on the situation and state of Germany. So like, there's no dialogue or anything like that.

I've been trying to avoid to use the word Germany, or anything related to Germany, making it seem as though it's some other country, but I can't really change some of the facts that are exclusive to Germany.
>>
Make it end with him infiltrating the NSDAP meeting while he was working for the Army intelligence, then have him say something like
'wtf I hate jews now'
>>
>>8308300
I don't think the timelines worked like that.
>>

No this is good, make him an agent of a zionist organization, and only refer to him as a codeword. Instead of NSDAP use "The Party".
>>
>>8308252
Use his father's original name Schicklgruber
>>
Agreed with >>8308252
Make it very introspective, and make it more of a character piece than a factual retelling. I'd even go as far as to include lots of dream-like states and incongruities due to an unreliable narrator.
The premise of your book is quite tacky so make sure to make the actual book an interesting read, and not let everything rely on the 'punchline' at the end.

there's no way any reader is going to read a post ww1 book about a german citizen with an unknown identity without thinking it's hitler. it's a bit of a catch 22, focus too much on the exciting and interesting part about hitler's rise to power and it becomes too obvious. too little and it could seem vague/boring/not fleshed out.

you'd have to do real unreliable narrator/introspective/absurdist shit to make the reveal make sense and not be completely gimmicky. which at the moment, an adolf hitler reveal is a gimmick.

what if the adolf hitler clues were a red herring and the novel was about another german man, ww1 veteran who was disillusioned with post ww1 germany and lust for power and the reveal is, it's not adolf.

Yeah true, pretty much everyone knows about Hitler's rise to power. That's why I was thinking that I end the story with the last sentence describing like the word 'National Socialist German Worker's Party' on a waver form or something. This is like even before Hitler was imprisoned for the coup, when the NSDAP was shit and not controlled by Hitler. This could possibly be kept vague enough so that the reader doesn't know.

Your idea is pretty interesting though, I hadn't thought of that.

Hitler was an Austrian citizen at that point.

But he moved to Germany in 1913.

Neil Young has been living in the USA for decades and he only has Canadian citizenship.

OP have this be the last sentence

"our hero", "the protagonist", "the young man" are decent alternatives. But of course, it depends on the tone and style that you're looking for.

OP this has been done before many times. I read a short story where a group of boys play war in a park under their mother's watch but one of them gets bullied hard. It ends with his mother taking him home. The last sentence is "well goodbye mrs Hitler" which is dang hilarious ok.
