If you go back to the 60s 70s plenty of the most succesful musicians especially with the folk and rock and roll scene blossoming were some of the most talented as well.

You can't generalize like that, it depends on the era as well, if you want to make disco music you wont' be the beegees today but you can still gain some fame and go to relatively big events if you excel.

The first and most important job of an author is to entertain. Don't like it?
