I wonder how reliable this is, since it doesn't seem to include any truly obscure words (and since the test itself is in somewhat broken English), but I got 30500, which is supposedly in the top 0.01%. I've been studying it for all my 21 years and I guess that's an average result for a non native. Also even if you don't know the answer you can accidentally click on the right one, which is not that great, the results aren't quite right.

Do you really use the last words of the test in your daily life? Do you see them in the books only?

No, hence why they compare the top percentages to Shakespeare. The average person doesn't have a use for so many words. In fact the average English speaker only speaks and writes at a middle school level. That's why newspapers and magazines (and internet articles) are all written at a 5th grade level.

I remember when I joined the school paper in high school I was told to rewrite my first article two or three times because the language was too complicated.

Anything above 20,000 means you'll probably understand any word used in conversation unless your talking to Oxford literature professors

In most books you can just look up definitions of certain words you don't understand that's what technologies for

>muh Latinate words

This is why English sucks. It has been cucked by Latin and Greek words that are so alien to the eternal Anglo we don't even understand a massive portion of our (Woodstock) vocabulary. Ask these euros with their romance language think they are so smart for knowing more English than a native speaker... truthfully they are likely relying more on their native romance language than their actual English ability.

The most "sophisticated" words in English are actually French, so if you know French, you are supposed to know these words. In French, it's much more common to use these words than in English, due to the nature of the language and its history. French is extremely elitist.
Shakespeare is much easier to read if you speak french.

My result.
Had no idea about "incipient" and "avulse".
I know what "aggrieved" means, and thought I knew all four words they proposed, but none seemed to fit.
I know what "querulous" means, but I had no idea what "fractious" and "extemporaneous" meant, so I had to guess.

I'm well read and scored exceptionally low, don't understand tbf
>>

Maybe you just guessed wrongly, and the others did not.
>>

what the fuck is jejune

i'm not surprised that the ones who score highly on this are ESLshitters considering that most of the words on this test were ones you'd only find in a dictionary
>>
I'm competent at knowing the specific meanings to words but I can't for the life of me comprehend the meaning of a full sentence that uses high vocabulary at first reading.
>>
>>8277268
That's the fucking point.
>>
>>8277278
I'm the exact opposite. Context makes it easy, but I can never pin down specific meanings.

Im not even a native yall are dumb
>>
>>8277391
You really do have to be dumb to get the lower scores. Vocabulary isn't a measure of intelligence, but your ability to piece things together and make educated guesses is.

However, this is actually where bilinguals -- those whose mother tongue is English, and those whose mother tongue isn't -- have a big advantage. More vocabulary to draw parallels from.

As a non-native English speaker, I can live with this.
>>
>>8277394
>he made educated guesses
that defeats the purpose of testing you idiot
>>
>>8277436
There's no "I don't know" option.

Test is borked.
>>
>>8277394
English is my third language, I don't use it that often with people, don't use it at school, don't read much english litterature and litteraly learned the language from watching cartoons and sports as a kid. How the fuck can a litterature board have so many plebs?
>>
>>8277436
Not really. Working out the meaning of a word from its component parts is part of understanding vocabulary.
>>
There are almost no vocabulary sizes between 24,000 - 29,000 in this thread. There is something wrong with the design of the vocabulary calculator of the test.
>>
>>8277456
>Working out the meaning of a word from its component parts is part of understanding vocabulary.
>working out meanings is the same as guessing
but we're over the bump limit so w/e
>>
>>8277466
>working out meanings is the same as guessing
That's literally what I was talking about you stupid mongoose.
>>
>>8277677
>working out meanings is the same as guessing
i was >implying that because it makes no sense

why didn't you work that out from its component parts
>>
>>8277685
I was saying that the "guessing" you're talking about is literally the same as the working out of meanings. In other words, your post makes no sense.
>>
>>8268423
>don't actually know some of the words towards the end, just eliminate the clearly stupid ones and go with what "sounds right"
>get 30325 (top 0.01%)
>>
I don't even read that much.... Well then.
