Well, this was completely and utterly depressing. Is there anything similar to Stoner worth reading?

I didn't think so when I read it, it was a weird feeling, sad but not depressing. I can't explain it now.
Also, try reading Cannetti's Auto-da-Fé. It was really devastating.

It's kind of weird. Stoner didn't ever really seem too phased by his failures and just kept soldiering on. It was admirable, but to watch life slowly wear him down definitely made me sad.
I never really rooted for a character before. For them to get a respite, but for Stoner I did. Especially with Katherine. I wanted her to show up at his bed so badly towards the end. Her dedication to him in her book made me tear up a little bit.

It certainly wasn't depressing for me. You're supposed to look beyond the fact that his life can be summarised in a single paragraph. For me it was like what I got out of it was the same heightened emotionality and aesthetic transcendence Stoner got from reading. Finding beauty in the banal, that sort of thing. It felt meta without the cold, ironic distance.
