I love lots of people. My parents, my close friends, even a couple coworkers. I am only in love with that one woman with whom I could see myself spending the rest of my life, romantically/sexually/etc. does that clear up the difference? That at least is what most people mean when throwing around those phrases

Also, as a tip, when you declare your love for a woman be sure to say "darling, I believe myself to be IN love with you" and they will cherish the distinction. Saying "I love you" is much more casual and less likely to be remembered.
