It's a fine line to walk. I'd be impressed to hear someone actually talented but not a stereotypical indicator of intellect, someone for whom the recommender wouldn't expect to get pseud creds from his intellectual circlejerk undergrad friends, i.e. not Gass, Joyce, Gaddis, McElroy, Pynchon. But also not overly obscure, to the point where they're trying to be a special snowflake.

Maybe someone like Amy Hempel, or better yet, a non-American writer of some renown in literary circles, like Kawabata. Dunno. I would add Barthelme, but he probably fits into that first category I listed above, because his reputation (and Barth's) basically boils down to being le clever pomo man.

Yes, I definitely can define what the best craftsmen and artists within a given field are (assuming I've sufficient knowledge), why can't you?

Anything that indicated they have a personal taste. If they cite a bunch of Japanese lit, even if it's just soseki, mishima, and similarly popular works it shows they know a flavor and they went at it instead of staying wide and safe like the dilettante way.

I wholly admit to the dastardly crime of name-dropping. But there's something essentially different about name-dropping Gaddis on a website dedicated to literature, whose users post about him every single day, pride themselves on being knowledgeable of a vast array of writers or at least on their desire to read more and more—and name-dropping Gaddis in a comfortable party setting.
In any case, my use of the word "pseud" was meant at least somewhat ironically. Expressing enjoyment of literature while trying to evade the connotations/social context of specific authors is a hard space to navigate for anybody.
