I want to write and to write well. But I'm mostly interested in perfecting my formal writing, i.e. what one would see in an academic or professional setting.
Basically I am trying to get to the point where I can throw a bunch of words on a page quickly and have them convey the intended message without sounding either pompous or unsophisticated. I've checked the archives and most threads concerning improving one's writing are geared toward fiction. Does anyone have any general advice or book recommendations to do with formal writing?
I already am an avid reader, understand reading will improve my writing and don't plan to slow down in that regard. Would learning a second language help me understand my native one better? Is linguistics something I should set aside some study hours for, and if so where should I start?

Disagreed. Official "grammar" is the last thing you need to write clearly. Try to write like you speak, OP. Read it back to yourself out-loud to see if it makes sense.

Just because it makes sense to you doesn't mean someone else reading it might find your prose hard to read. Elements of Style isn't just about "official grammar" but learning how to write effeciently (not the same thing the book shows), and there are plenty of helpful tricks in that book to help you do this.

A writer doesn't need to follow the conventions of our grammar religiously, but when a writer deviates from them, it should be intentional.
