I've been enjoying book one of the Chronicles of Amber series. The writing is a little simple but overall it's been engaging

I just finished Le Guin's The Dispossessed and I'm not sure how to feel. The political philosophy was good and interesting but overall I'm not so sure how satisfying everything was. Anyone else read it?

Also, I'm looking for a really good military/hard/space opera sci-fi hybrid novel or novella. I have Dune already but is there anything less based on nobility? I just read two books about nobility.

I enjoyed Old Man's War. The series goes downhill fast after book 1 though. But book 2 is aight.

Pandora's Star and Judas unchained isn't terrible. Some plot lines are definitely more enjoyable than others.

The Expanse series isn't too bad. Some interesting horror elements
>>
>Where were you when Cherryh fags got BTFO?

No they didn't. Guy who hadn't even looked at her body of work claimed it was all furry YA shit which it's not. And then claimed Le Guin is all YA, which it's not.

Let me guess. You had a stay at home mom who was so vapid and empty-headed you could never really connect with her on a meaningful level starting around the time letters started appearing in your math homework. Since she was the only woman you really knew on a personal level, most of your judgements were based on her, and anyone who didn't fit the bill had to be reassesed in a way to fit that model.

Hunter x Hunter/ One Piece is like Sanderson.

Stuff like Conan.
Elric of Melinbone.

The Sanderson recommendation is a half-joke because the "sanderson is anime" is not supposed to be a compliment.
But it fits shounen tropes well enough.

Sword and Sorcery recommendation is not a joke.

Opinions?
>>
>>7974482
Like I said, you won't get anything closer than First Law to Berserk.

Bayaz and Griffith are both Machiavellian.
Logan and Guts are alike in character although Logan can cause tragedy whilst Guts mostly receives it. They both wield huge ass swords and get their life fucked over by the Machiavellian character.
Both have comedic/more light hearted characters like the Navigator and Puck.
The atmosphere is very similar but Berserk is more episodic as of late.
There's also a guy who's very like Zodd.

>>
>>7973711
It's an interesting novel for its political ideas.

Everything else about it is dry. The characters are loosely defied, have inconsistent speech patterns and the plot skips the climax.

Overall, Lathe of Heaven and Left Hand of Darkness are far better. I'd recommend The ones who walk away from Omelas as a short story.

Read both it's the same thing. Could have been set on the same fucking world.

Grimdark edge, machiavellian villain manipulations, characters struggling against an individual more powerful, politically influential and manipulative than they are who eventually forsakes them in an attempt to setup a puppet state. Villain is not above manipulating the MC into fulfilling their own schemes. Puck/Navigator provides comic relief, both series prominently features torturers and those who use them to fulfill their own ends. Both series depicts the aftermath of torture and its profound effects on the psyche - one who falls into sarcastic nihilism and one who rejects the world by embracing the epitome of evil.

MC wields a large ass sword, is prone to fits of berserker rage - one self induced, one constitutional and they have a love interest who is a talented warrior taken away from them in spirit by the villain - the first reverts to the mental state of a child and the second is mentally plagued by visions.

Both series have two realms each the obverse of the other which only certain individuals can perceive (one via a brand and the other by inheritance) and both series show the faults of giving into the temptation of accessing it.
>>
>>7974549
Whether or not a book is magic realism has almost entirely to do with how similar it is to One Hundred Years of Solitude
>>
>>7974557
Berserk actually has like five realms http://skullknight.net/encyclopedia/universe/
>>
>>7974538

People here shitpost her a lot, that is for sure, but they always fail to discuss or even say where she is good. This was the deal with First Law too for a while until people stared reading it for real, hence scepticism about her quality.

Is Steven Erikson's writing TOO good?

Let me preface this by saying that I'm a huge Steven Erikson fan. I've started reading Fall of Light and, is it me, or is his prose becoming increasingly archaic? It's got to the point where it's like reading Shakespeare. It's one thing to produce a ripping yarn that's also very well written, it's another to have to parse the syntax in every sentence. Maybe I'm just dense.
>>
>>7976443
>Maybe I'm just dense.
This. Erikson is pleb-tier.

Personally, it get's my dick hard, but it is a valid complaint.

I've been running out of good shit to read, so I just started reading Abercrombie's standalone novels. Anyone else notice that everything he writes is the fucking same? It's very good for the first 3/4 or so of the book, then the last quarter of the book is nothing but the characters bitching about how little choice they have in life and how they regret the shit they've done. Oh, and about how all killing is horrible and pointless and turns everyone into monsters.

Also, way, way too many timely rescues for major characters. It becomes very predictable--it's as if no major character is allowed to die until he's been rescued from the brink of death at least 3 times in the book.

Picked up a mint copy for a dollar.

The language was difficult at first, but I've never read a more truly epic story.

It's like someone read the illiad, odessy, and anied, but decided that it should be a four part series so they wrote a sequel.
>>
>>7976699
I enjoyed how they played it out in Red Country with Logan, at least. Don't really get to see characters regress in their arcs like that very often.

>The Sanderson recommendation is a half-joke because the "sanderson is anime" is not supposed to be a compliment.
>But it fits shounen tropes well enough.
This, the first Mistborn is a poor westerner's first half of TTGL. Especially in the later half.
>>
>>7976717
>>7976699
It's really too bad, cause I want to enjoy the books. They're written very well. But especially towards the end it just gets so... preachy.

It feels like he's trying to convince his readers that people never change in good ways, and that no one can go to war or kill anyone without losing sight of right and wrong and becoming an asshole who kills indiscriminately.

My enjoyment of the books is almost ruined by how pushy he is about philosophy that I don't agree with.
>>
>>7976725
That makes perfect sense.
>>
>>7976718
Why do you say that?
>>
>>7976730
It does. And the problem is that Mistborn lacks any of the over the top, insane stuff that TTGL has. The series becomes even more anime with the whole sword-bigger-than-wielder-nonsense and the fact that only the main character and her ilk is useful in any sense once the story starts to go off the rails, that Sanderson had to power boost her bf to make him relevant to the story. I haven't read the last book or any of Sandeson's other work, but I can't help but laugh when people hold up the Mistborn-series as some kind of masterpiece of fantasy.

>>Have you read Poul Anderson's Boat of a Million Years?
I guess no one has read it. Anyway, 75+% of it is historical fiction, following various immortals as they appear from about 4000BC on, culminating in a slower-than-light space voyage. Themes include immortality (halted aging and somewhat accelerated healing), loneliness (immortality is exceedingly rare), and persecution (immortals tend to be executed as witches/sorcerers if discovered). It was a long, occasionally slow, read, but that could be due to not realizing the ratio of historical fiction to sci-fi. Overall I enjoyed it, and would recommend reading if my description interests you.

I enjoy it a lot, but it's not for everyone. The characters and prose are all right but have some flaws (descriptions can be very repetitive), the story is a little predictable, not in a bad way--it's a good old good vs evil, heroes journey to save the world type story, and it was done well. It's long winded as hell, if you just want to "know what happens", you'll be fucking miserable.

But the fucking worldbuilding dude. The detail and intricacy of the fictional world of Wheel of Time surpasses anything else I've ever seen in fantasy, Tolkein included. Each culture has a unique set of customs, attire, and societal norms, each nation has its changing allegiances, and each group or faction acts towards its goals in very realistic ways. All those things play off of and effect each other in very interesting, believable ways, it's like watching the workings of a really complicated clock. If that's what you like best in literature, WoT is a must read.

i think this is the only way i could get through this story. i tried the first book and finished it but had zero desire to read more. i happened to pick up the comic book, read a few issues, and liked it a lot more (despite the artwork) but it only covers the first book. this series is full of padding which i just can't deal with so a condensed tv series sounds like a great idea to me.
>>
>>7977340
>>7977373
I just finished BotNS. It was one of those series that made me frustrated because the prose was pretty, the story was interesting, and I enjoyed it for the most part, but it had some nagging flaws that made the whole thing less fun.

It was basically just fucking Severian. First of all, I got tired of the philosophical rambling very quickly. A couple philosophical monologues in an entire series is okay, to reveal a little more about how a character's mind works, but any more than that just comes across as a poor excuse for the author to enjoy making people read philosophical ramblings he's come up with and is secretly proud of.

Also, the way he made his decisions was always badly explained. It almost feels like he was doing everything on impulse. He kept swapping sides, disobeying orders and doing things that were really bad ideas in the long term, and the reader was never given a clue as to why.

The issue with worldbuilding is that the world is only as good as what you do with it. If you're satisfied with adding one more fantasy story to the shelves then all your worldbuilding is worth as much as the CGI in the Star Wars prequels.
>>
>>7977504
eh... kind of. Some readers enjoy reading just to appreciate the way the intricate world works. Like I said, it's like studying a complicated clock, all the unique parts fitting together perfectly in fascinating ways.

I agree that good worldbuilding with a shitty plot doesn't necessarily make a good story, but I don't think WoT is that way at all.

Foundation and Empire I really loved and the Mule was excellent, but this book felt like it just undermined everything. The Mule goes out like a cheap punk in a pathetic wasting death, Pritcher doesn't even get to do anything in the finale of the first part. Then the second half introduces Arcadia who is fun and interesting and it feels like a detective story but then she just gets shoved out of the way for a bizarre little musical chairs ending. Turns out Arcadia and the whole thing were all planned out from decades before and she was never in control. What I found worst of all was the implication that Bayta's action at the end of Empire wasn't even her own either, so I've got a sour taste about it all.

I mean I get the whole Seldon Plan not giving a fuck about individuals thing but I think Empire did a good enough job of covering that in the first story without needing this book.

I dunno, how are the remaining two books? I'm not sure I should continue.

Lord of the Rings is low fantasy.

why's it shilled as YA then?

Sword and Sorcery typically takes very human men with very human desires and fears and and puts them into absolutely bizzare alien situations.

Conan is heroically strong and fast and deadly, but that doesn't mean shit when he finds some lost god or giant metal statue and has to run like hell.

He's in it for money and sex and wine and the love of killing.

The things that Vance and Lieber and CAS dream up are horrible and beautiful and really really fucking weird. No other fantasy or sci-fi gets as really fucking strange as pulp.

>>7980291
Fast-paced, less autistic level world building shit.

Being sold as YA doesn't mean anything except that it's usually shorter, more likely to have first-person narration, and is more likely to have a young protagonist. Red Rising is sold as YA and the main character is forced to kill his wife in the first couple of chapters, and later on he stabs a dude's hand into a table and forces him to cut it off. Ender's Game has a naked shower scene where he beats another kid to death. Everything that John Christopher wrote.
>>
>>7980682
Ok. I thought there would be restrictions on content/use of expletives.
>>
>>7980689
It's not like there's a board of censors. Being rejected by schools hurts sales but hurts the school's reputation at the same time. The only gatekeepers are the publishers. They probably do try to keep expletives and sex scenes down unless it's a Real Teen Novel about teen pregnant drug addicts, and there are more made-up swear words in YA, but violence is fine and creeping existential horror is encouraged.

Does anyone else feel like we're on the edge of a pulp/pre-Tolkien revival? Son of the Black Sword was a fantasy in a post-apocalyptic world like something out of Moorcock, with evil sorcerers that turn into crows and can swordfight. John C. Wright's latest novel was directly inspired by David Lindsay. I hope that for all the drama, Jeffro's Hugo nom gets more people to read his Appendix N series.

>barbarian style character seems less relatable than a conniving mage

Really?

Those big barbarian dudes are cunning thieves in most s&s stories.

It's only in epic fantasy books where they are big stupid boors.

Wizards seem far less relatable to me. I can sneak about and swindle people and get in fights and bash people's heads open in real life, but I can't use magic.
>>
>>7980695
yeaa I know it's just Joe sure likes his blue language. I haven't read Shattered Sea but I'd be surprised if that aspect of his writing wasn't severely toned down. Is it not?
>>
>>7980682
YA literally just means younger protagonist with no swearing or sex scenes, which can make the story dull, but not always.
>>
>>7980702

Apendix n series?

Are these new stories inspired by gary's appendix n list.
>>
>>7980706
maybe it's because I'm a manlet lol
>>
>>7980715
Just a series about Appendix N. Jeffro's apparently some millennial that likes RPGs but doesn't like how D&D is now based primarily on D&D, so he went through and read everything on the list, or one or two novels if the list only mentioned an author's name, then wrote a review of everything.
>>
>>7980721

I had the good fortune to have read most of appendix n before ever being introduced to d&d or being aware that an appendix n existed.

The men who introduced me to d&d were old wargamers who played od&d with little old paper booklets in a little white box, written by GG and Dave Arneson.

I have a very different view of d&d and fantasy literature as a result.
>>
>>7980736
Yeah, that's basically what the "Appendix N" series is about.

How's Promise of Blood?

Thinking of picking it up because Renaissance era fantasy sounds interesting. I like Sanderson, but every time I ask for similarly fast paced modern fantasy books, I get Kingkiller, Weeks' edgy shadow series, and Blood Song, none of which had anything redeemable about them, except maybe Rothfuss' decent prose.
>>
>>7980819
You'll like it.
>>
>>7980819
>Kingkiller
Not at all
>Weeks' edgy shadow series
ONLY his Lightbringer series is like Sanderson's. And it's very close, unlike his edge series.
>Blood Song
Literally nothing at all like Sanderson and is a pile of garbage.
>Promise of Blood
This is created by his student and yes it is very reminiscent of Sanderson's style.

Could give Brian Stavely or Scott Lynch a shot.

I really should get around to reading the rest of Appendix N stuff. I feel in love with fantasy with Robert E. Howard's stuff. I stopped reading anything fantasy for years because everything I picked up just felt bland or uninspired. I loved that weird, fantastical feel of pulpy Sword and Sorcery. These days anything that happens to have a sword or a dude doing magic gets labelled "sword and sorcery". Makes it so hard to find books that I actually want to read.
>>
>>7980819
Promise of blood is definitely better than all those books you listed

I don't get it, why did he resort to begging? he knew sympathy magic, they even mentioned that caravans need 'em like crazy to keep their perishables fresh.

I love shitty US covers. I still remember people bitching about the Gardens of the Moon original cover. I couldn't even find a decent quality image of it online since they replaced it with the same art sans woman.

I just looked up this guy's series of reviews on Appendix n and it seems like an interesting read and challenge. He says before he started the task he was really only familiar with Tolkien, and to be honest I'm pretty much in the same boat. Might be a good thing to add to my backlog
>>
>>7980863

I know that feel

I had to back to rereading vance and dunsany

I only looked for like a few minutes

I still have a copy with that cover somewhere around. I remember being conflicted when i bought it because it sounded interesting but the cover was trash.

I never did finish the series though, maybe I should re-read it. I only got to book 6 I think.

A bit odd how? I'm not just looking for more Black Company, I'm just looking for more good fantasy in general.
>>
I think I just need to accept my shit taste and go whole-hog on chick magical realism. I'm not enjoying any of the the "classics" being shilled here or the pop fantasy reddit's all about
>>
>>7981134
>chick magical realism
How would you describe this?
>>
>>7981134
Stuff I enjoyed off the /sffg/ threads which got recommended here: Hyperion, Coldfire, Dying Earth
Stuff I enjoyed which are mentioned on the /sffg/ threads which I enjoyed but wasn't the person who orginally recommended it: Blindsight/Echopraxia, City of the Saved
Stuff off /sffg/ threads which I partly enjoyed and partly disliked: First Law
Stuff which is enjoyed by a select group of people on /sffg/ who share my shit taste: Brian McClellan, Brandon Sanderson, Brent Weeks
>>
>>7981178
My description was wrong. I think I just mean pop fantasy that isn't epic, steampunk or paranormal romance. Urban fantasy is fine as long as it isn't a shitty dresden clone, which accounts for 90% of urban fantasy

It should be a medium-sized brush but I'm extremely picky about prose and ambiance
