What are /lit/'s thoughts on Tolkien's works? Pros and cons, best and worst, whether he was a good author or trash-tier?

The first swig from the patrician cup will tell you that he's trash, but at the bottom you will once again find that he is a great author.

Hobbit is for kids, but created many modern fantasy tropes. It's a good read.
LotR is decidedly not for kids, and is a lot better, generally considered to be his masterwork.
If you enjoy them both, go for the Silmarillion or the Children of Hurin, which aren't great but are still good.
If you're REALLY into it after that, go for the History of Middle-earth, a 12-volume saga. 5-7 are especially well written.
The only reason you would continue past this point is obsession, and for that, I recommend the Unfinished Tales and Tolkien's Letters.

Double dubs confirm.
couldn't write villains for shit
cringe-making lack of class consciousness
orcs are clumsy parodies of british thugs
stole his best ideas from the Kalevala
didn't include the part about Loki tying his balls to a goat

Haha. Nicely re-purposed quotation.
