I'll try and dig up a quote about the long-sentence. It had to do with Gertrude Stein, Henry James, and someone French who said something about the long sentence.

I don't recall the sentences being particularly long in the English translation, but I do know that they are fairly lengthy in the Japanese original. I think it's fairly typical of the shishosetsu style.
