I read one of his books in 2003 that I enjoyed.
I can't recall which it was.

I don't think I'd like him today.
He's nothing like DFW, if that's what you're looking for.

in this video, Franzen makes a distinction between masscult (television) audiences, and audiences who enjoy literary fiction, and at about 11:50, you can see what fun he and DFW must have had engaging in intellectual pissing contests with one another:

DFW: "So, the only people who read—like—serious fiction are the people who don't watch TV?"

Franzen: "No . . . Thank you for drawing that out for me." [coughs]

DFW: "If I mis-heard, enlighten me." [smug]

the homoerotic smartguy tension is palpable.

I read a Leyner short story collection this year. It's the complete opposite of narrative fiction a la Franzen or even DFW. I don't know how worthwhile your time is so you'll have to follow >>7888692

Leyner seems to lack even the "intellectual firepower" of Franzen and is very out of place at that table
