What's the general consensus on this? Picked up for dirt cheap at a thrift store.

pseudo-philosphy

Essay disguised as a novel. It's painfully pretentious. You will skip pages A LOT. Pirsig is extremely self-involved. You will be thinking "Man, this guy is an asshole" the whole time.

Swill for cowards.

Got me in to the Greeks.

Start with the Greeks.

It is a defense of sophistry, and on the whole it's not bad. I actually really like the part about Richard McKeon.

The biggest problem with the book is that most of its readers have no idea what it's actually about and consequently take the wrong messages from it.

Unreadable

plebeian's 101 to philosophy, except instead of introducing one to the field, it will forever corrupt one's view of it

jesus fucking christ are we really going to have these threads again

this

it's not a fucking philosophy book, it's a memoir.

What to read then for an introduction into philosophy? Just start with original works? I'd like something condensed, an overview for a start. Sophie's World, maybe?

great intro to philosophy book.

>>7824708
but it is. it's a philosophical novel for sure. dont be scared to call it what it is because of the memes, bro.

if you have literally no clue about any philosophy, sophie's world actually isn't that bad
just be sure that you actually follow it up and read the works of all those it covers, because it's pretty much the most basic intro you could give for a lot of them
