Essay disguised as a novel. It's painfully pretentious. You will skip pages A LOT. Pirsig is extremely self-involved. You will be thinking "Man, this guy is an asshole" the whole time.

It is a defense of sophistry, and on the whole it's not bad. I actually really like the part about Richard McKeon.

The biggest problem with the book is that most of its readers have no idea what it's actually about and consequently take the wrong messages from it.

What to read then for an introduction into philosophy? Just start with original works? I'd like something condensed, an overview for a start. Sophie's World, maybe?

if you have literally no clue about any philosophy, sophie's world actually isn't that bad
just be sure that you actually follow it up and read the works of all those it covers, because it's pretty much the most basic intro you could give for a lot of them
