When did you "grow up" in tastes? What was the last YA novel you read? How long did you spend on genre fiction before getting into real literature?

Pic obviously not related, just got memed into reading his """masterpiece""".

I don't think I was ever into YA as a whole. The last YA book I read was this "Fat Vampire" thing I saw in the library a few years ago because it looked amusing. Most of the things I read were genreshit for 5 years before I got bored of reading Stephen King and Nora "JD Robb" Roberts.

This was the last YA novel I read, I think it was in 1999 which would have put me in 3rd grade. My parents tried to get me to read after my teachers kept complaining I was faking my book reports. I read all 6 books in this shitty series and was pretty much tired of it, despite not reading I had a high reading level from playing text based games on our windows 95 shitcan PC.

I started reading the Lost Years of Merlin books by T.A. Barron when I was in 4th grade or so. From those I moved deep into genre fiction, tons of star wars novels, all of those garbage R.A. Salvatore books. I read Dune in here but it failed to break me out of the genre fiction trap. I must have read almost 20,000 pages of this shit.

Finally I was 17 or maybe 18 when I started having angst after my holy Ron Paul lost the primaries and started looking for answers. I read maybe a third of the way through Atlas Shrugged before I put it down. I had read the Republic, Protagoras and a few other works. I asked my English teacher for better material and he gave me a beaten up paperback copy of On the Genealogy of Morality and instructed me to not tell anyone, especially not my parents.

The forbidden knowledge angle hooked me and as I read the thing I realized why he'd get in a shitload of trouble for giving this to a student in a school where our science teacher was a open creationist. Granted I had already converted to fedoraism when I was a young teenager but that was what cured me of my obsession with sci-fi and fantasy.

When I was 16 I was wasting time on some cracked.com-tier site or it may have been that one and I saw a list about books that had been banned in the past and the description of Naked Lunch made it seem interesting so I ended up reading it. After that I read a newspaper review of The Pale King that mentioned DFW had tried LSD which made me decide to read it. After reading those two from them on it was pretty much /lit/-tier books

Me, too.
What was your first lit? How has your taste evolved over time?

It was the summer between junior and senior year in HS, I was living by myself at my family's shore house working in a kitchen at a restaurant. I read Knut Hamsun's Hunger, the night I finished it I remember just sitting there in the dark mulling it over. This intense feeling, a desire for life and a sort of distressing beauty overtook me.

YA? Actual Young Adult was probably the HP series, but the last scifi/fantasy stuff I was into was Harry Turtledove's books, I think specifically Videssos, and ASOIAF series, thought that was a little earlier come to think of it. I picked up reading a lot around 9-ish so between 9-17, and then a little bit until 18 I read that stuff

Up until last year at the age of 86 after living on my farm that had been passed down through 18 generations I was a barely literate man but I decided to start reading stuff other than cereal boxes and twilight fan fiction porn online so I was going to the local library 50 miles away.
In my tractor on the way there I read the street signs.
In the library I fell down and nearl died and was brought to hospital where I began to read magazines and so to this day 4 years later I am now an English professor and have written 19 novels

I still read things I would otherwise consider pretty bad because they're fun and easy. As much as I love what would pass here, it becomes exhausting to read a slew of 400+ dense pages of Dostoevsky and the like.

What I will say is that I no longer have as much patience for the "bad" stuff as I used to. I picked up the Witcher series, and I've managed to slog to the final book but it's difficult to finish.

I think manga is easily my guilty pleasure but there are at least manga that have a universal appeal outside of horny 13 year olds

2008. That was 8 years ago, I was 17 then. I'm 25 now.

I only began reading when I was 19 or so, so I didn't have that trajectory.
>>
>>7816987
You don't --have-- to, but the way it typically happens is you get sick of genreshit after reading a lot of it and realizing most genreshit books are largely indistinguishable from one another.
>>
>>7817103
source on decent manga?

in 7th grade I read ASOIAF which was pretty much the only thing that allowed me to graduate from YA fantasy to serious literature.
