>part time
>working 45 hours next week
How the fuck do you guys find time to read in your lives? Unless you're all neet of course. Every single time I'm off work now, I just wanna lay back and recharge.
>>
there's 168 hours a week
allow 8 x 7 = 56 for sleeping
45 for work
that still leaves you 67 hours to read

spend less time shitposting on 4chan, staring at nothing on the computer, watching shitty tv, etc., and you'll find plenty of time to read

>not recharging through books

pleb
>>
I work 30~ hours a week, I'm in 10 hours of garbage fucking coursework I don't care about at all a week, which entails another 5-10 hours of homework basically, and I'm on my awful commute 12+ hours per week, all while trying to write a fucking Master's thesis.

I don't find time. I hate my life.
>>
How do you deal with the moral dilemma of knowing that any kind of work you do for someone is inherently exploitative, and that you need money to survive?
>>
>>7815290
It will pass. Relax. In 2 years you will have more free time. Its called being a grown up.

It's a "part time job" but he can get as many hours as he likes

He's not a full employee, he's a temp, but they're happy to give him tons of shifts

You're not even getting paid casual wages, sounds like a shit fucking job.

Sounds like he gets paid lots of hours but probably shit pay and no benefits and and can be canned without reason anytime his employers feel like it.

Capitalism, everybody.
>>
>>7815269
you also need to take chores, traveling, preparing food etc into account

depending on how good your diet is taking a dump could range from anywhere between an hour a week to 7 hours a week

plus the fact that you'll probably be physically and mentally exhausted on most week nights
>>
>>7815821
>Capitalism
Well, it doesn't help that businesses are being fucked over by stupid feel good Socialistic policies which also hurt the employee inadvertently.

My job isn't that bad, I get paid $8 an hour to stand around and flip burgers all day. It's easy as fuck. I just hate not having free time anymore. Then again I guess it is time to get used to that, I'm 18.
>>
>>7815848
You can read on the shitter.
>>
>>7815461
don't make everything about you, I guess.

I work 45 hours full time and go to the gym 5 days a week and jog 5 days a week. I read on transit to work and when I'm home. Your a pussy. Read more.

Have a full time job, but one I am dedicated to and attempt to improve myself through the practice of doing it. I get through about 30 pages while at work and when I finish I'm highly energised and ready to read. I read about 75-100 books a year.

Communism is a stateless, classless, and moneyless society.
>>
>>7816996
that's a very autistic definition of socialism, u autist
>>
>>7816996
actually if u work for a startup for an equity stake or stock options then u technically own the means of production, silly valley hypercapitalism has some full circle, comrade.
>>
>>7816996

Social ownership does not necessarily entail worker ownership, not in any local or institutional sense
>>
>>7817010
ever notice how being stateless, classless and moneyless goes hand in hand with being completely impoverished and subsistence economy
>>
>>7817012
>a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.
It's the only definition agreed upon by most intellectuals.
>>
>>7817020
well there's a lot of ways u can define "owned", "regulated", and "the community" and if u werent an autismal reject u would realize that
>>
>>7817018
Africa has probably the "freest" market in the world. Most of the economies in sub-sahara Africa are extremely exploited by western capitalistic societies.

>>7817016
>What is state capitalism for 100, Alex
>>
>>7817029

Statist proxy ownership is still socialism, and it's very misleading to dub it as being 'worker owned'.
>>
>>7817018
Can you please point out which country in this world is free of the state, class, and has no currency please?
>>
>>7817018
no
>>
>>7817036
If the state owns the mean of production than it is labeled as "state capitalism." Especially if that state has no democratic structure within it.
>>
>>7817036
>Statist proxy ownership is still socialism
wew
>>7817037
Such a country hasn't existed, at least since after Christ.
>>
>>7817029
>Africa has probably the "freest" market in the world. Most of the economies in sub-sahara Africa are extremely exploited by western capitalistic societies.

utter nonsense, there is almost no capital from the west going into africa at all, unlike say china that got "exploited" by iphone factories all the way to the second largest economy on the planet
>>
>>7817041
>>7817043

Democratic governance is still governance.

Are you seriously arguing that the notion of a "socialist state" is an oxymoron insofar as the state has any control over production?
>>
>>7817037
>which country in this world is free of the state

you can't have a "country that is free of the state" but there are plenty of stateless tribes living in total poverty in rainforests in brazil and south asia, no one is exploiting them, they have no contact with the outside, they also have nothing beyond elementary scraps of clothes and subsistence calorie diet
>>
>>7817045
>there is almost no capital from the west going into africa at all
Christ, right wingers really are this retarded.
>unlike say china that got "exploited" by iphone factories
The workers certainly have gotten and are still being exploited
>the second largest economy on the planet
And yet all that success is concentrated to a few billionaires and government officials.
Just because it's the second biggest economy in the world doesn't make it a great place to live. I would live anywhere in Europe, or for that matter some places in SEA than fucking China.
>>
>>7817052
>they also have nothing beyond elementary scraps of clothes and subsistence calorie diet
and allowing exploitation of western capital will somehow raise their living standards. There are people all around the western world that live in scraps and poor diets, they're called the poor and make up a large part of it.
>>
>>7817055
>>7817055
>>there is almost no capital from the west going into africa at all
>Christ, right wingers really are this retarded.

i guess reality is retarded then

>success is concentrated to a few billionaires and government officials

that and the 200 million people who got pulled out of poverty and in to the middle class

there's a reason communism is dead, and that is because it's fucking stupid. Even Lenin had to admit communism was failing and brought the NEP
>>
>>7817061
>There are people all around the western world that live in scraps and poor diets, they're called the poor and make up a large part of it.

well if ur just going to blatantly lie then there is no point in continuing this conversation, have a nice day in ur mom's basement raging at "the man" and ur dad who never loved u
>>
>>7817062
So I guess diamonds, gold, silver, and oil just fall from the sky amirite?

>that and the 200 million people who got pulled out of poverty and in to the middle class
And the over 1 billion people who toil away in factories have it so bad they have to put nets outside windows to prevent people from killing themselves. It's a violation of international human rights and western capital has a lot to do with it.

>there's a reason communism is dead
You're right. It's dead because a war waged by the business elite in the west that killed millions of people simply managed to out genocide and alienate the rest of the world from their enemies.

coming from a south-american anthropology student (and I'm not even a marxist btw), westernized / acultured tribes (ones in which capitalist structures work alongside with / instead of) typical tribal organizations do tend to have more than scraps of cloth, they even have wifi and satelite tv and xboxes (woah), but life is shit.

More closed, traditional tribes tend to be way more balanced though, to the point where one might think *gasp* perhaps western colonization and globalization might not be such a good idea for everyone and some people are just content to work their land and share their culture like their ancestors did!

I guess it's all about micromanaging time, but I'm in OPs situation. I'm supposed to be working like 10-15 hours a week but I get like four shifts a week every week and I also go to school three days a week.

It's not that I don't have time to read or work out, it's just that when I get home I am tired as shit and can't do anything but just sit here.

I haven't cleaned my apartment fully in months because it feels like I get home, relax a bit, sleep, then leave it again.

Most of my reading I do on public transport and during the lunchbreak at work.

Seriously though, have you stopped for a minute to really think hard about this? We have an obesity epidemic in the West. Think about what this means for a second. There is so much food, so much abundance of life sustaining energy, that one of the biggest threats to the working class is dying from eating too much. Isn't that baffling to you? How can you look at this and say living standards aren't at the highest in history? Can you honestly look at the past and say that subsistence farming, starvation and dying of incredibly common and preventable diseases is preferable? It blows my mind that anyone can think the way you do.
>>7817875
I'm Scottish you snarky cunt.
>>
>>7817876
Who said anything about going back? You fundamentally misunderstand the communist position if you think it means negating any of the cool shit capitalism does for people.
>>
>>7817877
I'm saying there's no need to revolt and install some bullshit dictatorship that will never actually "wither away and die" when by all accounts we have it better than we've ever had.
>>
>>7817882
But wages, living standards, ideals and political structures all across the west are falling and decaying. The entire world economy is propped up by nothing more than a series of interlacing bubbles. And you're suggesting that because poor people can eat more than they used to eat that these problems aren't worth confronting?
>>
>>7817695

No it wouldnt, it would get you maybe 12 dollars but taxes are insanely high and living in Sweden is much more expensive than living in the US.

Det handlar inte om hur mycket man tjänar i kronor utan om hur mycket man kan köpa för de pengarna.
>>
>>7817884
We've been in like a decade long slump if that's what you mean. Heating is more expensive than it used to be and not all wages have risen with inflation, I'm not sure that's enough of a hit to our lives to justify war.
>aren't worth confronting?
How about we campaign for reform where it's needed instead of just tearing down the entire system? I know that's very boring and means you don't get to call people "comrades" and fantasise about putting bankers up against a wall, but it's really a much more humanitarian thing to do.
>>
>>7817892
Reform has been tried over and over. I wouldn't usually be rude about it, but since you've already resorted to a hilarious strawman I'll elaborate: reform is the first port of call for the standard-issue imaginatively limited western liberal, who always thinks that he is the first person to ever stumble across the idea of being "reasonable" and "humanitarian" while confronting the excesses of capitalism, who swaggers about thinking himself much cleverer and more pure than the dirty communists who play around in the mud. What you've got is utopianism, a delusion you disguise by pretending to yourself that you're really just being more sensible. But there's nothing sensible about imagining the world's problems can be dealt with by some vague "reform" movement when every other has failed miserably.
>>
>>7817898
It's almost like reform is a gradual process of refinement spanning decades. Imagine that. Reform is the polar opposite of utopianism, it's realising that things are never perfect and we need to tweak things as time changes, rather than just tearing the entire system down in a tantrum, hoping that the new system will somehow be any better.
>>
>>7817898
Can you honestly just explain to me what's so bad about the current system? The government is pretty corrupt, which is a problem in every system. In terms of actual living standards I just fail to see the problem. The vast, vast majority of people have food, a warm shelter, internet, electricity, running water, and access to libraries and the like.

>>7817876
That is really an argument to quality, not quantity. Mcdonalds restaurants,The most readily available food on the market, has menu items in the upwards of 700 calories. Adding fries and a drink and most people have nearly exceeded their caloric intake in a single meal, while failing to meet most of the requisites for protein, calcium, dietary fiber, iron, or vitamins A, C, or D, which I would hardly call "life sustaining". That, coupled with internet lifestyles and little exercise is a very possible cause for national obesity.
If there was national interest (U. States) in eating healthier foods from a market shelf rather than a drive-thru line, even if the same amount of food were consumed, I'm absolutely positive there would be no weight epidemic.

Nap (or try to), tune out the noise of my nextdoor neighbor's toddler running around and shouting (goes on for hours), make dinner if I haven't picked something up on the way home, and maybe write.

Honestly the best post-work writing I've done is when I go straight to a coffee shop or library without ever going home and just get right to it. Next thing I know, I've gotten shit done and I still have hours to blow on sleeping/jacking off.

No, reform is a utopian fantasy. If only we can make these small, harmless changes then everything will work out - what's more utopian than assuming you already live in the best of all possible worlds? Revolution is not a "tantrum", and the fact that you could call it that when revolution is the foundation of everything you fellate today tells me a lot about how deeply naive you are.
>>
>>7815252
I'm not working right now but when i was the subway ride and my lunch break if I got one were productive reading periods. Otherwise there's still lots of time in the day. If you're working even a 10 hour shift with 2 hours of commute, sleeping 8 hours, when you factor in chores and cooking and such you've still got at least 2 hours in there unless you have a lot of other stuff to do.

I think people who find it hard to find time to read don't actually enjoy reading.
>>
>>7817909
All of the "good" things about it that you've mentioned are a load of horseshit, is what's bad about it. An abundance of food is practically worthless when most of the affordable food options will give you diabetes and/or cancer. If you think housing and utilities are up to basic standards all across the board, you're a naive petit bourgeois cunt. Social mobility is functionally a joke for most of the population. Uber has shown that people are fine with 19th Century level wage slavery so long as the service is convenient and trendy. The list goes on and on.

This is pretty much what I was gonna say. The west is the only place that manages to combine overeating and malnutrition.

We're also the only (global) generation with a lower life expectancy than the previous, not because of industrialised countries (our life expectancy is always on the rise because we're eating healthier and buying poor countries healthy foods e.g. quinoa) but because of 2nd world countries now gaining a middle class that can indulge in the "luxuries" of junk food and diabetes.
