He's right about this, but Wilde writes some of the best dialogue of any English writer, so it doesn't feel boring or disappointing. Pretty easy and quick read, I'd say you should just do it.

On a serious note though, actually read it - it's very good!

It's both really, at least I thought the painting/soul thing was pretty creepy

Its short, never dull, very witty and well written
Very high quality book, Wilde has the best aphorisms

That would be a bit more of magical realism/surrealism, I think. The entire thing with the painting isn't explained. It is only told like "Dorian wanted it to happen so it happened, lol".
