Why do people find this book difficult?
Is it just due to the characters?

it's that, the scientific terminology that (although not that complicated) can wear on people without a background in that field, and the vast amount of episodes that (seem to) have nothing to do with the previous one.

It's not exactly a masterpiece but it's still pretty good. It's not that difficult to read if you keep focused and don't just let it set in as you would a novel written in plain style. And check out the wiki for things that go over your head

First section is the hardest and then it gets easier to read even though everything gets crazier.
