>One time Matt told Andrew to deliver a pizza with his hat sideways, shirt untucked, belt unbuckled; and gave him a bike chain to wear around his neck. Andrew did it. The man came to the door, terrified. Andrew felt abstract and out-of-control. It took a long time because it was a large order, with Buffalo wings and extra bleu cheese. The man’s face turned red and neither of them spoke, even when Andrew dropped a container of bleu cheese and they both watched it fall into a little hole in the concrete. It was difficult to get the bleu cheese out because it fit almost perfectly in the strange hole. “What happened,” Matt said. “The person was afraid of me,” Andrew said. “You’re a good worker,” Matt said. ''For you'' Andrew answered.

What did he mean by this?

Is this actually what his writing is like? I thought maybe I would check him out some day, but that's terrible. Even besides the meme.
>>
What part of Tao's aesthetic/literary plan does this passage complement?
>>
Need more context. Are they fags? Shit writing regardless

>Shivering, he walked with increasing speed toward the juice bar, wanting to stop moving in a way that he’d disappear, which didn’t seem possible. He ingested two capsules of MDMA with a green smoothie, then walked four blocks to a café where he was interviewed by a small, balding, frequently laughing man of indiscernible age for around forty-five minutes, during which Paul smiled uncontrollably, with almost continuously unfocused eyes, unable to discern stillness in the single image of everything, containing him in a sphere of blurrily passing scenery. He felt low in his seat, warming his hands on a cup of tea, and was sometimes aware that his face was arbitrarily pointing in strange directions, as if to consider his thoughts, or the interviewer’s questions, from various perspectives, probably seeming genuinely eccentric or weirdly, insanely pretentious. His teeth chattered and his upper body sometimes “convulsed,” he thought with brief interest, on the walk to the Drawn & Quarterly bookstore, where he sat absently in the audience in the back row with a slouched posture and, with a sensation of entering his body in medias res, at a moment when a decision, approved without his input, was about to actualize, said “is David Foster Wallace really big in America?” at a speaking volume to no one, it seemed.

Not that guy, but I just gave it a chance. There is some potential in descriptions like "near distance" and maybe the bit where he tap's michelle's shoulder with unclear purpose, but I'm really trying to give the guy a chance here. The problem for me is that it is over-descriptive, muddled by adverb after adverb, and generally contrived. He seems to rely on these vague emotional descriptors and fits them in when they are clunky. That comes off as very contrived, like he's desperately reaching for some symbolism. The amorphous flicker and the hole in OP's passage are good examples. The use of adverbs is another example. I just read this >>7732844 too, and the way you he inserts them, to me, seems like he is actively looking for adverbs specifically to rebel against the typical advice that writers should avoid adverbs. This is overcompensation and it reeks. I get it, he's doing it for a reason, but it's like people think that all you have to do to be a good writer is put everything in for a reason. I understand that this is also a common piece of writing advice. Reading it, the writer comes off as someone who watched a bunch of YouTube videos on writing (which I can't really complain about because I do it too) and set out to write with a surface interpretation of the information: I will do this, but will do the exaggerated opposite of this. Where are the good reasons for writing anything I just read? Where is the sincerity? Where is the subtlety? Reading this is like reading someone who amassed a bunch of writing advice but was never able to learn anything about technique from reading literature.

There is nothing original being said here, which is not untypical of literature, but there is no original technique, no thoughtful tone. It's just a guy with a big car and a small dick.

Reading your post is like reading a post from someone who's got his ideas on writing from /r/books and youtube-videos, trying to mimick the most banal art criticism.

Lin communicates alienation and disconnection. His main character (in all novels) is caught in a self-destructive irony and self-consciousness. A desire to escape this struggle is apparent especially in Taipei, where the main character constantly desires and fantasizes about disappearing, dissolving, and in general trascending the laws of reality and escaping into fantasy.
>>7732844
See this entire passage as an example, which i find to be disturbing and greatly written. His constant use of adverds is really just a testament of that. An agonizing impulse to constantly observe, classify and categorize everything that happens around him, often out of paranoia of being judged and out of the position of others.

I really gotta leave now and maybe expand in detail once i return. Gotta recommend this podcast with the great Silverblatt, in which he analyzes Taipei and talks with Lin about it.

Don't get why people hate tao. I can imagine it's probably out of some sort of hivemind contrarian anti-modernist point of view that this board cultivates, alongside never having read any of his stuff. Check out american apparel and Taipei, yeah they're not ground breaking, but they're still very enjoyable and insightful reads.
>>
>>7732919

your stating a bunch of rules that you think tao lin follows in the wrong way, but shouldn't you be relating it to the atmosphere and impression of stuff he's giving out. what's the point in saying there is 'no thoughtful tone' (isn't there? the whole mood seems undeniably very nonchanlant and observant)

personally I think it's fantastic, it's absorbing. you get some insight into the characters perspectives immediately from how it's written. its just really good.
>>
>>7734778
>Taipei was enjoyable and insightful
Lol
>>
>>7734844
Nah dude you're just a contrarian :^) you couldn't possibly dislike something I like genuinely.

read it again autist

fuck off you stupid faggot
>>
>>7734929
>fuck off
No, I totally agree with you, you don't understand. No one could dislike Tao or fail to find him insightful. If only they read him of course.
>>
>>7732994
Wow, never thought about his work that way, makes way more sense when he explains it here. I might have to give taipei another look now. Silverblatt is the goat
>>
>>7734831
I thought I did. I said it all seemed contrived. Doesn't that address the atmosphere and impression? I admit I haven't read any of his work fully, but what has been provided in this thread is definitely not absorbing. It feels like the opposite: contrived.
>>
>>7732822
Some of his stuff is actually pretty good.
>>
>>7734778
>anti-modernist
anti-modern, anon.
