What is the term for an early part of a work that "teaches"

What is the term for an early part of a work that "teaches" you how to read the rest of the work? Does it have the word "codex" in it? I'm drawing a blank here, really frustrating.

OP here, thank you, but not quite this, I meant like in a work of fiction, on a more subtle level, like the idea that the early levels of Super Mario Bros are supposed to subconsciously teach you the basics of how to play the game as you play them. A section or chapter that contains the keys to interpreting or understanding the rest of the work.

Always called it "level 1". Not sure if its exactly what you're talking about, but I had a professor explain that often the descriptions of characters can help you understand the direction of the plot. Par exemple, how people are described as dressed and the tone of their voice. "Level one".
