Okay, in that case have an intimate portrayal of the people that live where you are. Have them do things that are on the fringe of society or take them to more esoteric places.
Consistently, examine death throughout.
Also, give a very subtle hint to some kind of mystical force. Not necessarily God or Cthulu, but something that is not apart of our reality, like the stream of conscious babbling of a dead person.
