When I write I usually choke out a few pages, look it over the next day, decide it's irredeemably shit and start anew.

I can't read or write if there's noise.
Background noise and white noise is fine. But audible conversations and music fuck me up.

I can usually read on the bus, though, assuming people are quiet.

If I'm writing poetry, I read my shit aloud as I'm writing it, which isn't that weird.

I also edit as I write. That's probably a terrible habit and probably slows down the process.

I think you're probably just doing retail therapy. I understand anon, it's very gratifying, but you have to control that shit. I have hundreds of books in my amazon wishlist. I was getting to that point where I was buying much more than I was reading. Now I just buy all the books I want to read in a year when I get my tax return and refuse to even look at my wishlist until the next year. You just have to show some restraint. It takes discipline anon. That's what the alcohol and cocaine is for.

Get drunk, get drunk some more, record myself doing a vocal rough draft of an entire 5 chapters that spans 40 minutes, edit when sober

Inspiration often occurs when I'm alone with my thoughts in bed. I'll get out of bed to fetch my journal and write until I have fleshed out the idea as much as I can.
It's terrible for my sleep schedule.

I write poems. some of my loose rules:

ratio of 10:1, that's the minimum ratio of poems you read vs. poems you write

always have a journal on you, when you make a connection, record it immediately

from someone else's book: "if you hafta get up at 3 am to write it, you'd better write down all of it"

delete the first stanza

sharpen all adjectives and adverbs

check to see that you haven't shaved off too much steel in sharpening adjectives and adverbs

write good sentences--check them by deleting all your line breaks--if your sentences suck, your poem sucks too

punctuate your goddamn poem

chose an image and stick to it, that's your conceit

Write tipsy, edit sober.

Can only write when I'm depressed or have been depressed for a long time.

For poetry:
Down a respectable mouthful or hard liquor, I'll need the euphoria
Start by reading some poetry aloud, your own or someone else's
Take up notebook, look at latest poem
Remember something vividly (for me it's been some great sex I had with a friend that was just a friend up until last monday)
Pick a detail from that memory
Expand or remove on that topic in text
Freeform aloud or in text
Write a lot, the good lines will come
Rhyming and form will come but doesn't have to
Read it aloud, if it works, it works
Expand or remove, or both
Get more drunk
Maybe write more
Fall asleep

it's probably interesting to the person who is writing / fucking but not anyone else... i mean maybe you'll come across a guy who invented a thing that wasn't in the kama sutra, but that's a unicorn. same way for writing, it's pretty personal and I'd never think anyone else would be interested (unless I made some huge breakthrough like discovering the split bamboo position)

caffeine or stimulants for me though i try to avoid them
