I liked Clavell's Shogun.

Tale of the Genji is a classic.
Book of Five Rings is short. I think the military concepts are pretty basic.

I like the short stories of saikaku Ihara. He was one of the ukiyou-zoshi writers during the 18th century.
Chikamatsu is also pretty good.

This here was my answer. I'd read Musashi first to get a feel for the style. Taiko is a bit more hard to follow given the sheer number of individuals in the book. Both are absolutely fantastic reads though.

I know its not a book, but I just watched seven samurai for the first time today

HOLY SHIT IT WAS AMAZING. IT WAS TROPES BUT THEY WERE THE TROPES THAT STARTED THE TROPES. IT WAS THREE FUCKING HOURS AND A HALF HOLY SHIT AND IT WASN'T EVER BORING.


EVERY MINUTE WAS ENJOYABLE.
