Reading this now, OP and I actually like it more than Blood Meridian, but that's just me.
I hear Lonesome Dove is really good, but 800 pages is a commitment. I'm sure L'amour wrote some worthwhile stuff.

I like Lonesome Dove and Warlock, like other posters recommended. Lonesome Dove is really good, not as prosaic as the others though. If you can track down the other books in the Warlock series they are pretty damn good as well.

A couple of recommendations I never see in here:

The Beetle Leg by John Hawkes
The Drop Edge of Yonder by Rudolph Wurlitzer

Both are very 'literary' westerns.

I liked reading Guy Vanderhaeghe's western's a fair bit, its pretty much all he writes.

Check out the Last Crossing at least, its been a long time since I read it but i remember liking it quite a bit.

Would All the Pretty Horses be considered a Western? If it is, then give that a go. Enjoyed it almost as much as I did Blood Meridian.

Though it is the antithesis to Blood Meridians gritty psychedelic portrayal of the West

It's a classic romanticized Western, full of love, brotherhood and adventure, one of my favourite books for lazy summer days

Makes me wish I was a teenager again and that alone should tell you what kind of rose coloured glasses you're putting on.
