hey, guys. do any of you own one of the folio society's letterpress shakespeare series?
if so, what do you think of it? they look beautiful. also, how did you decide which one to buy? if i decide to go for it, i'm between hamlet and the tempest.
but i just don't know how i feel about spending this much on a book.

yes, i own three of them, but i don't plan to buy any more.
they are beautiful things. i bought the ones i own because the plays are significant to me in some way.
if you have a special connection to the play, go for it. otherwise there are plenty of other nice editions of shakespeare out there.

Don't know much about that particular series, but in general the folio society is a bit of a joke. Sure their stuff "looks nice" and all, but the scholarship is normally seriously lacking, and the typesetting, while better than most modern stuff, is still lacking.
Looking at the price, you're probably better off getting something like a Clarendon Press edition and saving 90% of your money while getting better scholarship and typesetting. The downside is no cardboard case or marbling, but that's not worth the extra money.

I wish marbling was more widespread, it's so beautiful. When did book designs become so bad?

Around the Victorian era, as a result of greater mass production. Also linotyping or something near the end of that era, I can't remember the term.
