"If I were incapable of undoing his plots, I would have had to have been a madman to pursue such a colossal project."
This doesn't seem correct.
Context: The speaker, who has embarked on a massive project in the past (which continues into the present), is scoffing at the idea that he couldn't subvert another character's subterfuges.
