Start with Of Mice and Men then, it's incredibly short and is very good

Steinbeck's Travels With Charley is a great little book that can really get you into the American spirit in my opinion

I don't know what you mean exactly by American Spirit, but Pynchon captures an aspect of that in some of his novels.
If you're interested in film, Paris, Texas is the best depiction of American life I've seen in a movie.
