What's the best way to go through an author's short stories? Should you just go through them all in one go, or finish one, read something else, and come back to another story later?

I doubt Kafka composed his stories to be read in any particular order.
>>
I prefer to read them in chronological order so you can see how the author's style and interests develop over time.

This.
It was pretty interesting with Lovecraft.

This.
It's fascinating when you get towards the end of an author's bibliography and see their downward spiral happen. Poe comes to mind in this regard.

That is an interesting approach, but not recommended if the author was particularly productive in the medium, or if he sucked at first.

Well, if we are talking about a collection composed by the author (such as Borges' "Aleph" or Joyce's Dubliners) I prefer reading it in more or less one go. A pause still won't really hurt the experience, but such collections are usually more cohesive than mere selections, they are a deliberately structured whole. In Aleph for example you can see how Borges approaches the same themes in different ways, there's the contrast between the first and second story etc. A selection or complete works, on the other hand, lack such structural nuance, and a pause in reading will be less of a problem. (The editors of selected stories often do try to achieve an effective structure, but it obviously isn't the artist's work and it can't be as successful.)
