Pretty sure some studies show the number of FTM and MTF to be somewhat similar. Might just have to do with greater visibility of trans women since they are far less likely to pass. And might have something to do with far more AFAB's identifying as non binary which also skew the numbers.

It depends where you live op. Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, some parts of germoney have far more ftms than mtfs.

Transgenderism is (probably) caused by incorrect hormonal balance in the womb. Everybody starts off as female, but if you have a Y-chromosome, androgen concentration ramps up and masculises your fetus. If this process is incomplete, because concentration was too low or your receptors were less responsive or whatever, you end up with gender dysphoria. You'll have a penis and look like a male, but your brain is still somewhat feminine.

MtF is probably more common because every male goes through androgen-isation where, if one sliver of your biochemistry is slightly miscalibrated, you end up with dysphoria. There's less if an opportunity for females to get too much androgen as they don't have a y-chromosome or go through an equivalent gender-swapping foetal stage. But females do still have some level of test, so a similar mishap is possible, though rarer.

Also the ratios are evening out slowly pretty much everywhere, more FtM transitioning in the west and more MtFs in eastern EU, many people are still in the closet probably so we won't reach a full picture for some time
