But the whole notion of "pre-emptive self-defense" is pretty stupid, it ends up just being an excuse for unprovoked violence. If you find that they're literally planning to attack you while you're on the way home from work or something, then sure, attacking them before they attack you might be justified if there is no other way to guarantee your survival. There is a matter of degree/extent though. I don't fall for the "negative rights" meme, but I do recognize that some things are more harmful than other. Forcing someone to starve to death is no different than killing them by their own hand, but saying "I think gay dudes are gross" isn't on par with actively causing gay people to die. It's still wrong, but it doesn't justify murder since it simply isn't causing that level of harm.
