"Respectability politics" has very little to do with self-respect. If that was what it was about, there wouldn't be any need for it to be "political". Respectability politics is this notion that members of an oppressed minority should try to accept the norms of the majority group and stop acting different. I suppose it makes sense if the "oppression" is of a very severe form, like being murdered for being gay, but ultimately it's giving in to threats of force. Not every LGBT person has to open and visible about it (the difference between being merely "straight-acting" and supporting respectability politics) obviously, but the LGBT movement does create an opportunity to demonstrate that people shouldn't be shamed just for being different, an opportunity which should not be ignored. That is really what it should be about IMHO, at least once basic rights have been secured, otherwise LGBT people will continue having to justify themselves as "one of the normal ones" in order to be accepted by society.
