How come one of the most legendary rock bands of all time was so gay?

Are there other examples of gay/queer themes becoming strangely popular and dominant in a field?

He really wasn't a "rock legend". People have made him out to be now, but he was kinda gimmicky and nichey when he was alive. Queen was good music but not super amazing like a few other bands. And a lot of Queen music became just filler music for events and stuff.

Because that's who he was.
Besides, it's not like that's unusual. Rob Halford of Judas Priest is not only gay, but inspired a whole gay subculture's aesthetic.
