Military draft was mandatory in my country a generation ago. My parents told me stories about it.
One of my uncles got so fat during the draft that his own mother couldn't recognize him when he returned.
Father remembers the countless stupidities that he came across. People had to eat with dirty hands covered in mud. They had to clean their rifles, leave them in mud while working and then clean them again (your weapon must be clean at all times). The commander didn'tnoticethat absurd situation at all and everyone was just blindly following his orders.

For those that don't know, transgendered people have been welcome in the military for over a year now. Just received a mandatory class on it a few days ago. A military psych has to have diagnosed you, and a transitioning period follows before you follow the same standards as the gender you identify as.

I also believe that everyone should serve at least one term but not for the sake of masculinity. I think the structure, discipline, thickened skin, and leadership potential is plenty reason. People are complacent, and it's a terrible condition. I personally believe the military can curb that from a lot of people. Obviously not foolproof, many simply end up resenting it but many still change for the better.
