Between the ages of 3 and 6 years old, both male and female children start to develop sexual feelings for their mothers.

Male children realise their father's possess the mother in a sexual way, and feel anger and jealousy towards him. They also fear him, because they expect that they would be "castrated" for competing for the mother with him. They choose to identify with the father as a way of emulating him and competing with him for their mother. But the fear of competing with him and "castration" is too great so they project their sexual feelings onto other females who represent the idea of their mother, rather than their mother herself. Anyone who doesn't go through the above properly is said to have an 'oedipus complex'.

Gay men, instead of identifying with the father, instead come to direct their sexual feelings towards their father in an attempt to mollify him, and this "daddy issue" then gets directed at other men. Gay men have an oedipal complex.

The female equivalent -

All young girls start out being sexually attracted to their mothers. When they realise their father possesses their mothers sexually, the young girls realise they don't have a penis like him, and so cannot truly take their father place sexually. She desires a penis like her father, which then becomes not just a desire for a penis, but a desire for the father as a whole.

Now that she desires her father sexually, she sees herself as in competition with her mother, and so comes to identify with her mother as a way of emulating her so she can compete with her for her father. However, the fear of retaliation from their mother causes women to direct their feelings towards other men instead.

Lesbians never get over "penis envy" and therefore are stuck desiring their mothers and identifying with their fathers. This is called the Electra complex.

My friend doesn't hate women or anything. He doesn't hate anyone. He also doesn't seem to love anyone. It's just, well he's a manipulative asshole.
