Biologically they are what'd coded in their DNA. Socially they can be whatever. All that matters in the social setting is that people are able to effectively communicate. For all it matters I can say I'm a dinosaur and if everyone understands to address me as such, it's all good. Same thing with using made up words to talk to children.
