he was yeah... he does it freelance now, but not in a shop...

pig skin is good for practice yeah... when he was doing his apprenticeship they had him start off on fruits and pig skin then from there they had him practice on himself...

i could ask him about shit like needle depth and whatnot when i get the chance... if i don't remember remind me and i'll probably get around to it, and if you have specific questions just ask and i'll relay them to him... he taught me how to set everything up years ago, but its been a while...

he actually agreed to let me tattoo something to him (just to have a tattoo that i did) soon so i'll be having a conversation with him about that shit soon anyway

one thing though, and i didn't bother with this first cuz i know people will do shit they want regardless and it's not necessarily a deal breaker anyway... a lot of shops prefer to hire people who first started tattooing after a professional apprenticeship... and a lot of shops don't like teaching someone who's started to practice on their own, this is partially due to a teacher not feeling like breaking any potential bad habits that might develop in someone self taught...

habits from that kinda shit are hard to break... i can't speak from a tattooing perspective, but from teaching myself guitar and ignoring my teacher's advice about thumb placement (i had a teacher for about a month when i was 13, but i hated him and having to do something scheduled every wednesday) then trying to break the habit years later (wanted to see why it was so stressed and what difference it made) it really is a bitch when you start doing something like that to "correct" it later...

but if you're good they'll deal with it, it's just not a preference...

before he was tattooing anything they had him draw a bunch of shit in pencil with a weight on it to get used to drawing with something weighted the way a tattoo machine is

One thing you could ask him for me; inks. Has he worked with anything other than professional tattooing ink? I want to experiment with different things. I know that the Thule people used soot they rubbed on sinew they inserted under the skin. Soot from certain plants is also the standard in traditional tattooing in Polynesia and Borneo from what I gather. There's even some info on Shamans taking psychedelic plants and using the soot from them to make tattoo portals into the ghost world (I think that was Papua New Guinea). Very exciting stuff.
If he only have used professional ink, where is the best source to get it. And why use some types of ink over others? I know that standard red ink is supposed to be unstable or fade faster or something.

About the apprenticeship thing. I totally agree with them. Correcting mistakes is a bitch to do, and it's not like there's a shortage of tattoo enthusiasts to pick noob-slaves from. My interest is mainly as a hobby and to explore the more traditional techniques of tattooing, so I don't think an apprenticeship would happen anyway.

yeah there's practice "skin" you can buy, but it's really shitty and not good to practice on so fruit and vegetables work best... and well yourself

aside from the time we got shitfaced and used razorblades and indian ink just to see... he's only used professional ink... you can either find a shop for tattoo artists or order them online... just based on what i remember with black ink kurosumi is good (don't get the bootleg chinese shit... the colours are alright but not as good as the black... their orange stays pretty fucking bright though) red and white intenze is good (especially white) eternal has some nice greens... basically you gotta just do shit like experiment with brands and different shades... for grey shading you can get pre-mixed shit i can't remember the brand, but it's in my s/o's tattoo box so i'll just look later...

get madacide to clean shit and green soap, a&d helps the needle slide across skin easier...

you need a different machine for shading and line work... you adjust them based on sound from what i remember... 1/4 inch on the needle (it can't stick out more than that)

red ink can be an issue cuz a lot of people are allergic to it... mom's ink has all natural inks but from what i remember everything but the red is shit... brown ink is annoying and fades really fast and has some of the same issues as red as far as allergies go

he's never tried any traditional tattoo methods, they interest him but that wasn't a thing at the shop he worked at and he hasn't explored other methods...

i don't draw nah... but i just figure i'll do something simple and trace a stencil... he's actually pretty whatever about the idea of me fucking up though... he expects me to

its not a perfect science, but theres a community of transitioning afab nonbinary people, and they mostly take testosterone with inhibitors that stop excessive hair growth and some other unwanted consequences. some take a small dose of testosterone, but your friend seems to want fairly big changes so thats probably not the option since low t basically just gives you a lot of hair and a deep voice. sadly bone structure and other huge things like that are practically unchangeable unless your friend is younger than 18/19. you could suggest them to go to the gym, since it helps a lot with building muscles that will give them a more masculine frame(this is where the t comes in effect too, it helps build muscle mass faster) and exercise helps with depression and negative emotions in general too.

its pretty late, but not always too late. honestly depends on how big their hips are and how small the shoulders are. testosterone relocates body fat to the stomach, so the size of their waist shouldnt be as much of an issue, and it could help make the hips seem smaller too, while exercise helps make shoulders wider. so, unless theyre extremely hourglass shaped, the fat redistribution and wearing appropriate clothing (passing guide in op has some good tips for that) should make them look at least passably masculine. i dont know much about endometriosis but with testosterone it either fixes hormonal issues or makes them much worse. i think in this case it should help but they should definately talk to a doctor about it if they can and do research before doing anything.

Gonna assume you are getting an abdominal...if not, some of this may not apply, idk.

1) DO NOT GET SICK BEFOREHAND. Do everything you can to avoid catching a cold. If you are sick enough, and there is stuff in your lungs, you can get surgery cancelled last minute because there is a chance you will asphyxiate during surgery.

Nearly happened to me. They decided my airways sounded clear enough though, so we went ahead. And then the cold came back viciously when I got out of the hospital, and the pain on my incisions from the constant coughing WAS MURDER, plus I ripped open one side from coughing right before a weekend and ended up spending days taping it shut.

Yeah. Don't get sick if you can help it.

2) If you're concerned about anything, make sure you get that concern to a DOCTOR and not just nurses. Nurses can be great, but they don't always put two and two together.

I discovered the hard way that I metabolize opiates too fast for morphine to have any effect on me. I was screaming in agony after surgery, and the nurses gave me OTC Tylenol for "breakthrough" pain, and that's what they told the doctor. I honestly didn't know what to expect from morphine, so I didn't realize my reaction was SO abnormal. It was like 4 days in the hospital before they realized the morphine was totally ineffective and I had really been on nothing but Tylenol for pain since I came out of the OR.

3) Do what they tell you to do. Like if they say to get out of bed and walk around, DO IT. It's important for healing, and will help you fart and poop faster post-surgery. (Very important. You may not be allowed any solids until you can at least fart.) If they give you a breathing apparatus to practice blowing into (dunno what they're called, but you have to blow into it to make a piece of plastic rise inside), use it. It's to help you keep your oxygen saturation up. Basically, don't just lie there and sleep - moving around some (even if it feels like shit) is crucial for healing.

At home:

4) Make sure before you go that your "sick room" is totally set, everything is super clean, etc. You won't be able to clean it later. They will teach you how to use your arms to get in and out of bed, but it will be harder to do at home. Maybe get a stepstool to put beside your bed to help you get in and out. You want to do some walking every day, but you DO NOT want to go up and down stairs too much. Other people in your life better be accepting that they will running and fetching for you and doing your share of chores for a little bit.

5) Like the other anon said, fibre. You want the smoothest shits around. I lived on Cream of Wheat for a couple of weeks post-surgery and was honestly terrified to eat meat (so I didn't).

6) Comfy pants! Jeans will be murder to wear for weeks, so will most underwear. They gave me underwear in the hospital, this really soft disposable stuff. I honestly swiped some pairs to take home, because they were more bearable than anything I already owned. Anything too rough or strongly elastic will suck balls.

7) If you still have pads or pantyliners, do NOT throw them out yet. If you don't have any...sorry, you need to buy one last pack. Immediately post-surgery, you will bleed (and they will probably give you pads in the hospital), but once you've been home for a week or whatever, you will probably bleed AGAIN as the last stitches dissolve. And THEN...the bleeding will finally be over for good.

8) This may not apply to you at all, but...personally, I really kinda mourned after my hysto. I could REALLY feel a physical "gap" in my body, and I had nightmares about it, and nightmares about birthing stillborns (which I think was a kind of subconscious body-horror over losing my ability to have children). It's okay, I think, to NOT be purely joyful it's gone if you're not. It's a big part of your body even if you never wanted it to be there.
