In the area that I live in I have personally been subjected to bullying/harassment/bigotry/etc. for the majority of the time I have lived and worked here. I will agree that the entire south is not filled with hateful LGBTQ killing machines. However its not unicorns and rainbows as far as the eye can see either. The south is a bad place and scary for the LGBTQ is a blanket statement that isn't 100% accurate. However, if you really believe that the quality and style of life is the same in the south as it is for every other open LGBTQ community member, then do as I said, come down here and get the southern experience for yourself. Tbh it's hit or miss depending on where you are in my experience. At my particular workplace, every single person I work with is supportive of my transition, and they are not rude or invasive when asking questions about the process or what it's like. It comes from an honest place of wanting to be understanding. Everyone makes a very good effort to use the correct pronouns, and they all know that it's not a big deal if they slip up because I'm early on HRT and don't pass yet. I've only got one shithead teenager who purposefully calls me "she" every chance he can, and is the rudest little brat I've ever met in my life. Because he does this, I know of at least 3 or 4 people I work with who've caught wind of it and actively dislike him for it. I feel very supported at my workplace, and I enjoy going there and seeing my coworkers. Nice people.

My hometown, however, about 40 minutes away, is a different story. It's in a much more rural area. I used to work somewhere else, and a couple that knows me from town came in and witnessed me use the mens' room, and proceeded to cause an issue about it to the point that my employer at the time attempted to tell me I "wasn't allowed" to use the mens' room anymore. What was really weird is that she was a lesbian, so I'd think she'd have a higher likelihood of backing me up. When I was a teen and still living with my parents, where they forced me to attend church with them, the entire congregation pointedly refused to call me by my name. So it varies.

I can't and also choose not to speak for the entirety of the LGBTQ community when I'm talking about my experience as an openly gay man living in Alabama. However, for the most part this isn't even an arguing point on any real esteemed level. The most recent big "anti gay" stories are mostly from Southern states. Kim Davis from Kentucky, the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Florida, Alabama State Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore being removed from his post, and so on. The "meme" that one anon is arguing against is a reality because these stories happen all too often in the south.
