The tl;dr is there are a lot of us, and we're all different. We are people first. Our experiences with wanting to be the other gender vary a lot in their manifestation. And being trans shows huge strength of character.

Not all of us get surgery. Also, "trans" is considered a blanket term. In studying anything "lgbt" (or otherwise), look past labels to observe reality. Crossdressers and drag queens are not trans, imo. But that comes down to labeling. Transsexual is my preferred identification term over transgender.
