The only reason his cisness was called into question was because his mother decided to do so. If I take any random kid and start making them live as the opposite sex, that doesn't automatically increase the odds that they really are trans after all.

Granted nothing is certain from the scant details in the article, but there's nothing that screams doubt. The fact that they emphasise that no pressure was put on the kid to masculinise himself speaks as to their focus being on his best interests, and not simply forcing normalcy on him.
The fact that they bring up Spongebob as a masculine interest probably more speaks as to the rigid femininity imposed on him by his mother. And that they accept such a faggy show as something perfectly typical for a boy to watch shows the flexibility of their own idea of masculinity.

Again, scant information, but all signs point to it being the right decision to me.
