1. It's national identity, and lot of people see Americans as God's chosen people
2. Lot of American churches are based on cult worship, and some pastors just exploit people to rip them off instead to spread the positive message of Christ
3. The capitalist society makes people more competitive, and this is prevalent in churches too. Both atheists and Christians are in militants warfare because of the "I must win" mindset, instead of making a compromise(which is more left-wing idea).

Again, I don't view being gay as a sin, believing only the 10 Commandments and the great commission (you know, "go and make disciples of all nations" thing) still stand. There is an insane amount added things in the bible (if I recall a surprising amount of anti-gay related stuff was put in because of King James being a massive flamer) and rules that are just accepted despite having no backing. I'd only use the "all sin are equal" thing for those who do believe that anyone that's part of LGBT is automatically a devil worshiper and should burn. I'm actually kind of surprised that there's a few churches around me that openly accept the LGBT community without calling it a sin, but one actually has an openly gay pastor that's married to another man.
